Class 6A: As expected, Cleveland was the No. 1 seed followed by La Cueva (2), Centennial (3) and Hobbs (4). After being edged out for the No. 4 seed, No. 5 Volcano Vista will host district rival Atrisco Heritage (#12 sed) in a first round game next weekend. Rio Rancho (6), Farmington (7) and Cibola (8) will also host games next weekend. West Mesa was left out as the NMAA selection committee awarded berths to Alamogordo and Atrisco based on the mathematical criteria. Las Cruces and Organ Mountain also missed the playoffs.
Class 5A: To the surprise of nobody, Artesia was named the No. 1 seed in 5A. Three of the four top seeds are from District 5A-4. Joining Artesia in that exclusive group are Roswell (#2 seed) and Goddard (#4). Piedra Vista is the #3 seed. Deming (5), Mayfield (6), Los Alamos (7) and Valley (8) host first-round games next weekend. Highland (5-4) was left out even though they had a better overall record than Belen (2-8). Belen, though, won the head-to-head matchup in convincing fashion (30-7).
Class 4A: All three of the 9-1 teams got top four seeds – Silver (1), Bloomfield (2) and Taos (3). The Tigers have won nine straight games. Lovington earned the No. 4 seed by virtue of their district championship and rigorous non-district schedule. Portales (5), Albuquerque Academy (6), Moriarty (7) and Aztec (8) host first-round games next weekend. The committee awarded the No. 12 seed to St. Pius X (2-8) rather than Espanola Valley (6-4).
Class 3A: Socorro was ranked just No. 3 in the final MaxPreps poll released Saturday but the unbeaten Warriors were awarded the No. 1 seed in Class 3A ahead of Ruidoso (#2), Robertson (3) and St. Michael’s (4). Thoreau (5), Raton (6), West Las Vegas (7) and Dexter (8) host 1st round games next weekend. NMMI, ranked No. 11 by MaxPreps, was left out in favor of Thoreau and Newcomb. Thoreau was given the No. 5 seed but were ranked just No. 12 in the final MaxPreps poll.
Class 2A: Because there are just 13 schools in Class 2A, only 8 teams make the playoff. Here is the bracket:
