Both programs have an array of recruits that are projected to play at the next level. At the end of the night, King Phillip” offense along with a key defensive interception for a TD, did what it needed to take home the win as they handed Xaverian their first season loss 19 -14.
The game was a defensive battle for the entire night. , But the most impactful play was the 37-yard interception return for a touchdown by Carson Meirer in the third quarter that made the difference for King Phillip. Xaverian did get on the board with two touchdown passes, but King Philip held on to improve to 3-0. The visiting Hawks drop to 2-1. The following players had a solid performance. This will be a two part series with each team top 5 performers and honorable mentions. We will begin with King Phillip “Warriors”.
The game was a run oriented offensive battle by both teams. But when his name was called to deliver in the passing game, he stepped up and showed his abilities. “McLeish” completed 5 of 9 passes for 89 yards. His composure in the pocket was visible. He has a nice smooth throwing release and accuracy is there. He does get the ball out quickly if he needs to.
Highlights
His name was heard throughout the entire game for making plays. His talents to be disruptive on defense were obvious. He is quick out of his stance and strong at contact. Has a very large frame with length and he uses it to his advantage to overcome his target. Can easily see why he has grabbed attention from d1 schools which has translated to offers from Brown and Eastern Michigan. He is also getting interest from Boston College, Umaine, Uconn, UNH, Columbia, and Dartmouth. Will likely add more offers after the season. Solid recruit!!!
Highlights
“Astorino” was another name heard throughout the night. “Astorino” played lights out and appeared hungry and angry. Played with a solid motor the entire game. He was very good in plugging gaps the entire night. He can also be disruptive in run blitz schemes as he doesnt stop pursuing the ball carrier until whistle is blown. He has received support through the admissions process at Bowdoin College, Middlebury College, Wesleyan College, and Bates College. Easily confirmed he is a linebacker who enjoys the game.
Highlights
Brewster played both sides of the ball WR/ S and also was put back as a kick returner. On offense, he showed soft reliable hands. He can turn quickly after the catch and get up field for extra yardage. His quickness stood out. On defense he was great in run support with good awareness to know when to come up. He also plays well in Zone schemes with help over the top. What popped to me the most was his quickness. Also ,his vertical leaping ability was seen when he broke up a nice pass over the middle. Currently holds opportunities to play at WPI, Endicott, Western New England. His senior season will likely result in additional schools coming on board.
Impressive performance and a key part of his teams win. He can kick, play defense and also be a valuable WR on offense. Kelley caught my attention on a nice over the shoulder catch that set up great field position for his team. But most importantly he was automatic in the kicking game. Hitting from the left hash mark two different times at 32 yards and 30 yards. His kicks had plenty of distance.
HONORABLE MENTIONS: 2023 Nathan Kearney (LB); 2023 Carson Meirer (LB)
