I am listing the players who’s stat line stood out, who people recommended but most importantly, only players who either I watched live or was able to watch highlights from their specific game. For the best chance to be featured, send me your weekly film on twitter. My handle is “@DevinRecord”, please don’t have any hard feelings if you weren’t included.
Kalani was all over the ball carrier all night long, no matter who it was. Steward set the Richland HS record for tackles in a season last year when he recorded 97 as a junior. He’s looking to build off his fantastic season and improve on it. Week 1 he did just that against Southridge HS, the senior racked up 21 tackles and was phenomenal. He hits the holes going full speed, he reads the offense/QB very well being able to anticipate if it’s a pass or run quickly. You can tell he enjoys the contact, as he was involved in plays all night. He is on pace to break his own tackles record in a season.
Roy had a great start to his season in week 1 against South Kitsap HS. The junior was efficient all night long and contributed in a big way. He had one forced fumble to go along with 11 tackles, 4 of them for loss. He was quick through the line to get to the quarterback or running back. His strength allowed for him to throw the opposing line to the side many times. His tackling was on point all night, not letting many guys by him. He’ll continue to grow off his great week 1 going into the rest of the year.
Collin looks and plays the part of a collegiate athlete/linebacker. He’s very impressive on the field, flying all over the place all night long. he has amazing change of direction, being able to shift his hips full speed and still keep his speed throughout. His IQ on the football field is insanely high, as it seems like he knows the QB’s next play before it happens. He forced a fumble week 1 and had 9 tackles on the night against Redmond HS. Collin will be a LB to watch in the state throughout the year.
Mason Kallinger
Mason Kallinger
Kallinger had a MONSTER week 1 for West Seattle HS. He finished the night with a staggering 24 tackles, 4 of them going for loss, and he even contributed half a sack. I haven’t been hit by Mason, but you can tell this senior hits HARD. He forced THREE fumbles week 1. His technique is excellent, making it hard to break away from him. He holds up the middle of the field extremely well and is exactly what a coach looks for in his leader on the defensive side.
**Matai now attends Lakes HS**
Sarte is one of the top linebackers in the state, so a top performance during week 1 might not surprise a lot of people. His play on the field spoke for itself, he was playing excellent against the run and pass. He dropped back in coverage like it was no problem, keeping up with all the receivers easily. He was in the backfield quite a bit but did have 3 of his 14 tackles for loss. He also had a sack on the night and a pass deflected. Now attending Lakes HS, Matai is going to be the leader of a very solid defense that will keep improving as the year goes on.
