Who are some under the radar backs in 6A?
Prep Redzone takes a look…
Trevon Kinchen – Lovejoy
A physical, tackle-breaking back with above-average speed, Kinchen has been outstanding this year as a junior, and he has really good size at 5-foot-11 215-pounds. He’s not a burner, but he runs hard, runs with balance, and can get tough yards between the tackles. The Lovejoy back has been very productive this year, averaging 140 yards per game so far this season along with 8.5 yards per carry. He’s tough, runs behind his pads, and tough to bring down by just one defender. His biggest game so far came against Jackson where he took off for 216 yards and a touchdown during the big victory. He’s also rushed for 151 yards against a tough Crisp County team and ran for 166 yards last weekend in a win over Rockdale County. On the season, he’s rushed just 82 times for 700 yards and four touchdowns this year. His 700 yards leads all rushes in 6A at the moment.
A true under the radar back out of Acworth, Ponder is a speedy back with excellent vision and a nose for the endzone. He runs hard up the middle, but he also has enough speed to get to the edge and up the field down the sideline. He’s excellent in the open field and can be tough to coral for defenders past the line of scrimmage. He can score any time he has the ball, and he’s off to a tremendous start to the 2022 season. Through four games, Ponder has totaled 730 all-purpose yards and has scored five touchdowns. He’s rushed for at least 140 yards in three of his first four games of the season and can really frustrate a defense with his running style. He’s shifty, quick, and has good size at 5-foot-11 185-pounds. He’s a guy to keep an eye on for the rest of the season.
Ryan Taleb – Houston County
A breakout running back to know in Middle Georgia, the 5-foot-10 185-pound junior has been dominant all season long for a strong Houston County program. Just a sophomore, Taleb has shown D1 ability so far this year, averaging 9 yards per carry so far this season. Through four games, Taleb has rushed for 550 yards on just 61 carries, showing why he’s one of the most explosive and productive backs in Middle Georgia. At 5-foot-1 180-pounds, Taleb brings a physical aspect to his game, but he’s also a shifty back who can make defenders miss in the open field. He’s got some speed, and once he gets through the line of scrimmage, he’s always a threat to score. Leading Houston County to an early 4-0 record, Taleb has shown the ability to take over games, rushing for 200 yards in a win over Perry and rushing for 152 yards in a win over West Laurens.
Nykahi Davenport – Roswell
Another impressive 2024 back, Davenport has become one of the leading rushers not only in 6A, but in all of Fulton County. An athletic back, Davenport has carried the load for the Hornets on offense this year, and he’s helped lead the way to a strong 3-1 start. The 5-foot-11 180-pounder has rushed for over 100 yards in each of his first four games of the season. Davenport went for 127 yards against Milton, 114 yards against Marietta, 107 against Centennial, and 144 against Denmark. He’s run against some really talented defenses this year, and he’s more than held his own. He’s shown the ability to play at the next level down the road, and he has the numbers early in the 2022 season to back it up. In total, Davenport has rushed for 491 yards and two touchdowns so far this season.
