Here are some South Georgia running backs who are having a big start to the 2022 season.
Jimarion Guyton – Pierce County
The Bears are off to a big 3-0 start to the season, and their rushing game is a big reason why. Everyone knows about DJ Bell, but they have another senior in Jimarion Guyton who is running wild this year as well. A fast back with great vision and feel for the game, Guyton doesn’t need a ton of room to run, and when there’s a hole, he knows how to take off for a big gain. He’s averaging over 10 yards per carry right now, showing why he’s one of the more explosive backs across South Georgia so far this season. He might not be the lead back, but defenses need to treat him like one. Guyton has rushed for 354 yards this season and six touchdowns. Look for him to have more big games and help push Pierce County to a deep playoff run this fall.
Javaad Bynum – Turner County
A new running back to know in South Georgia, Bynum is having a breakout senior season for Turner County, and even though they aren’t off to the best start to the season, Bynum has been excellent running the football. The two-way standout has good size and knows how to take over games on the ground. His best game this season came when he took off for 214 yards and four touchdowns in a win over Randolph-Clay. He’s a big-play waiting to happen with enough speed to score on any particular play. You may not know about him this second, but if he keeps running like this, there’s a chance some smaller programs at the next level could start showing interest. Bynum has only rushed 44 times this year, but has 444 yards and 7 touchdowns on the year.
Michael Grandy – Savannah Country Day
A slippery back with speed and burst, Grandy has been terrific so far this season, rushing for at least 100 yards in every game this season. In week one, the quick, versatile back rushed for 152 yards on 28 carries and three touchdowns in a 31-0 over Windsor Forest. In a week two win over Pinewood Christian, Grandy rushed 26 times for 116 yards and two touchdowns. In a week three loss to Aquinas, Grandy rushed for 104 yards but failed to find the endzone. He’s a reliable defender as well, but his able to carry the load at running back makes him a back in Savannah to know about for the rest of the season. On the season, Grandy has rushed for 372 yards and five touchdowns.
Jordan Lovett – Statesboro
One of the leading rushers in Georgia through the first several weeks, the Statesboro back does have a few smaller offers already, but if he keeps running the way he has through the first two weeks, he could see more come his way very soon. A dynamic athlete with plenty of speed, the 6-foot-0 190-pounder has been tough to stop all season, rushing for 504 yards yards and five touchdowns through his first three games. He runs extremely well for his size and has clocked a 10.85 in the 100-meter. He’s a natural runner who can break tackles, but if there’s an opening, he’s going to run through it for a big gain. He’s running through defenses right now and it could lead to some bigger offers later this fall. He’s averaging 9.2 yards per carry, making him one of the more prospective backs in South Georgia and around the Savannah area.
