Guys are learning to be a true gunslinger and we love to see it. Here are a few guys off to a good start. (There will be a part 2 for this article. A lot of QBs have gotten off to a good start in MS.)
Trip Maxwell Trip Maxwell 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Hartfield Academy | 2023 State MS , Hartfield Academy, 2023
Trip has been nothing short of amazing this season. For two weeks straight he has passed for over 200 yards and helped his team to some big time victories. We watched Trip put in a ton of work this summer that we are seeing pay off tremendously. He was very determined to make sure he has a good year in 2022. I’ve seen him make some incredible throws on film this year. He is going to keep this up. Can’t wait to be able to see what his final numbers are.
Trey Petty Trey Petty 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Starkville | 2024 State MS , Starkville, 2024
This man has been on fire his first two weeks of this season. I tell people all the time that he has improved so much since last year. Trey is a guy that plays point guard in basketball. I watched a recent interview of their head coach and he mentioned that Trey plays like a PG on the field. The things he does when leading his team is amazing. He is going to be a 2500 plus yard passer this year.
Xavier Hunt, Louisville, 2025
Zay Hunt has stepped up and shown that he is not afraid. He was 22/30 with 222 yards and 2TDs against West Point who was ranked number 8 at the time. He was fearless as he ran around making plays. This is a player who stands very confident in the pocket. He does not hesitate on getting the ball out. Throws a beautiful spiral and has been making plays for his Louisville squad on a regular since his first jamboree game. His improvements over the summer have shown that he is somebody to remember. He already has 5 total TDs on the season.
Garrison Davis Garrison Davis 5'11" | 190 lbs | QB Holmes County Central | 2025 State MS , Ridgeland, 2025
Garrison passed for 536 yards and 5TDs last week. He is taking full advantage of having two of the best receivers in the state on his team. This young man is set to have a memorable year. I always remind people that Coach Dyess has said that this kid may pass for 3000 yards this season. That would be an amazing thing to see.
Braylen Williams, Nettleton, 2026
Even I am surprised that this kid is a freshman excelling the way he has the first two weeks of the season. Kid is already at almost 500 yards with several TDs. He is a 6-1 170 guy that will continue to grow. His ceiling is to the heavens if he keeps on this same pace. He has a quick release and moves well inside and outside of the pocket. He has good ball placement and he knows how to throw his receivers into yards after the catch. He also can scamper for a few yard rushing to keep the chains moving if need be. This is a player who will be a top prospect in his classification soon. The words just needs to get out that he is down here doing amazing things. He is one to keep up with.
Coby King Coby King 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB Greene County | 2025 State MS , Green County, 2025
King Coby has made his presence known down on the coast of MS. His teammates are falling in love with the way he is making sure he leads his team. He is a part of that 2025 QB class that is getting a lot of recognition across the state. He has accumulated for right under 500 yards already this season and I can see him going for 2000 yards this sophomore season. Coby still has some mechanical work to do, but he has a high ceiling if he keeps on this pace.
