“Defensively we just kept telling them to hold on and get us a chance to get the ball back,” said Grenada’s head coach. “We knew we could make plays, but just needed the opportunity.”
Hernando jumped on the gun rolling early in this game. It was a wet field, but that didn’t keep them from finding their ground. They just couldn’t find the end zone for a while. After a good drive they would settle for a field goal.
Grenada was moving the ball well. Macaleb Taylor was their guy until he got hurt late in the first half. He wouldn’t return to the game.
“Our QB is a sophomore,” said Grenada’s head coach. “He didn’t know he was going to play until around 3 o clock today. He had very few reps this week and he made some tenth grade mistakes.”
An interception by Hernando gave them a touchdown. They had momentum going with their defense. Grenada just couldn’t get anything going after Macaleb got hurt. Another interception would happen with 6:25 left in the third quarter. It would end in a punt by Hernando.
Grenada finally got on board right before the end of the 3rd quarter. Number 1 shot up the sideline for a 40 yard scamper. The PAT was no good. Score was 10-9.
After a couple of big stops, Hernando was back in field goal position. They didn’t score but they capitalized on the opportunity for three points. It wasn’t looking good for Grenada. The score was 13-9 in Hernando’s favor.
“It felt good to make that play,” said Ashton Ross. “I just wanted to catch the ball and score.”
With 1:39 left in the game Ashton Ross caught a deep pass that would put them in the lead. Grenada fans were loud and their sideline was going crazy. Hernando got the ball back, but that was it for them.
“In the huddle we knew somebody needed to step up,” said Ashton Ross. “We knew somebody needed to make a play. Now we can go back in and prepare for DeSoto Central.”
