Picayune vs JDC
Picayune showed no mercy on the smaller school tonight. The Maroon Tide rolled on to a 28-7 victory over the JDC Jaguars.
“We won, but we still got a lot of work to do,” said Jamonta Waller Jamonta Waller 6'2" | 230 lbs | DL Picayune | 2024 State MS . “We came out fired up and need to keep that going!”
Dante Dowdell Dante Dowdell 6'2" | 215 lbs | RB Picayune Memorial | 2023 State MS kicked this game off with a forty yard run followed by a three yard touchdown. They were in control early driving the ball. Darrell Smith was very instrumental on their second drive scoring. He adjusted very well to an under thrown ball and then ran a touchdown in from 8 yards out. Picayune was in control of the first quarter.
“We’re really not that good yet,” said Picayune’s head coach, Cody Stogner. “We played a food 29 or 30 minutes tonight, but the rest was very sloppy.”
Jamonta Waller Jamonta Waller 6'2" | 230 lbs | DL Picayune | 2024 State MS would start the second quarter off with a big sack and forced fumble for Picayune. Chris Davis Chris Davis 6'0" | 175 lbs | RB Picayune | 2024 State MS would strike would a 37 yard touchdown running giving Picayune a 21-0 lead over JDC. It was very hard for the Jaguars to get anything going, but the Maroon Tide was hitting on all cylinders.
At the half the score was Picayune 21 JDC 0.
“We got to do a lot of work this week,” said Jamonta Waller Jamonta Waller 6'2" | 230 lbs | DL Picayune | 2024 State MS . “We got to remain focused and just keep going.”
Picayune would receive the ball to start the second half. They popped it off fast with a touchdown pass to Darrell Smith. It was his second of the game. “I just wanted to make sure my team was good, make sure our team was right,” said Darrell Smith. “We wanted to have a lack of mistakes and just try to win.”
With 6:27 left in the 3rd quarter the Jags would force a fumble and give them the ball. After a hard fought drive Nick Thompson Nick Thompson 5'8" | 185 lbs | RB Jefferson Davis | 2023 State MS would make a 30 yard run to score. The PAT was good. The score was 28-7 Picayune.
“Those are two games we lost in the second half,” said Picayune’s head coach, Cody Stogner. “We have got to do a better job of playing in the fourth quarter when the game is on the line. That’s just part of conditioning. That’s something we can fix and we will fix that on Monday.”
With a 1:24 left in the third quarter JDC would force another fumble. Jamonta Waller Jamonta Waller 6'2" | 230 lbs | DL Picayune | 2024 State MS would end the third quarter with a big time stop. We were headed to the fourth.
The fourth quarter wasn’t friendly to JDC. Picayune didn’t score again, but their defense wasn’t giving up much ground.
“Picayune played good ball tonight,” said Lance Mancuso. “We made a lot of mistakes and Picayune will make you make mistakes. We will be alright. We’ll get the guys ready for next week.”
“We lost focus a little bit in the second half,” said Darrell Smith. “We will work on those things. Those are things that we can control if we really work. We got to work in order to get back to Hattiesburg. We just got to work.”
