Purdy is one of the more complete LBs in the state. He’s as versatile as they come and is off to another hot start. He can play inside and outside LB spots without any hesitation. He’s good in the running game and understands how to fit gaps and exploit holes to make TFLs. He’s strong enough to win a 1-on-1 pass rush when he’s blitzing as well. He’s got the ability to get around the corner as well. He’s decent in coverage and really thrives in zone coverage. Purdy is aggressive, but only when he knows he’s got help over the top. When he takes his shot, he’ll likely get the pick. Purdy is a strong tackler as well and is able to make plays in the open field. He’s such a smart player on the field and is able to diagnose things before they happen. This summer, he was at camps and looked fantastic. The start of his season is showing all that hard work has paid off. Purdy is going to continue developing and will make some college program really happy when he gets there for fall camp next year.
Kaden Raffeo – West Vigo – DL/LB – 5’11” 195lbs – 2023
Raffeo is off to a fantastic start to his season. He’s looked really good and playing with more confidence each week. He’s been down on the DL more than in previous years and he’s making the most of his opportunities. He’s strong, got a really high motor, and can latch on and prevent the ball carrier from going anywhere until reinforcements arrive. He’s got a decent get-off and has been able to time a few snaps and blow the play up in the backfield. If he’s able to hit the weights and work on bending around the edge some, he’ll develop into a really good player at the next level. Raffeo is decent at tackling in the open field and being able to seal the edge and force the cut back in as well. He’s a good player getting more confidence each time he steps on the field. The upside is there with Raffeo and wherever he ends up, he’s going to make an impact.
Tristen Boyd – Gibson Southern – CB – 5’11” 165lbs – 2023
Boyd is off to a fantastic start and looks great to this point. He’s playing with so much confidence it’s obvious to see. Gibson Southern has been putting him out wide on an island and having him go against the opposing team’s best option. Boyd is standing his ground as well as you could ask. He’s aggressive enough, yet patient at the same time. He’ll come down and play the running game without an issue. He’ll come to balance and make the tackle every time. In coverage, he seems to float until it’s time to strike. He’s got fantastic closing speed and has been able to bat down a handful of balls already this year. He’s got a decent frame and feels like he’s got longer arms than you’d think. He’s never out of a play and also plays smart. He’s a solid corner with the raw ability and instincts on what to do and how. Boyd’s a fun recruit because he seems like the type of recruit who comes in, develops, and is a reliable starter for a few years. Corners are pure gold at the next level. If Boyd is able to develop on the same path he is, he’s going to have a really good career.
Carson Pieczonka – East Central – DB – 6’0″ 170lbs – 2025
Pieczonka is someone I got to see live a few weeks ago and looked good. While he didn’t have any game-changing plays in that game, I noticed him and he looked fantastic. He had no chance to make a play because he was all over his guy like a blanket. He’s twitchy and has good length with speed. He’s able to play in the running game and isn’t afraid to lower his shoulder to make the tackle. When he’s the last line of defense, he plays safe yet intelligent. Nothing will get over his head and he will come down and make the play. He’s got decent speed and can see things developing which allows him to make the play. He’s not the biggest DB but he’s still physical and isn’t afraid to get into the grime of the game. Pieczonka is a sound recruit with a decent amount of upside if he gets into the right program. He’s versatile and a good athlete who understands basic defensive principles and concepts. He’s going to be in a really good spot long-term and the best part is he’s still got 2 years of development left.
Trey Willard – Heritage Hills – DE/RB – 6’0″ 205lbs – 2025
Willard is off to a fantastic start and he’s earned it. He’s a versatile player who plays on both sides of the ball but has been lighting it up on the defensive side in my opinion. He’s as consistent and high-motored as they come. He’s not going to give up on any play and will chase down the ball carrier anywhere. When he’s rushing the passer if he doesn’t get home, he’ll throw his arms up. He’s good at tipping balls into the air. It’s simple, but you’d be amazed how many young players don’t do this. He’s good on the edge and flexible as well. He’s strong enough and is going to get stronger over time. With Willard, you can tell he’s been well-coached for quite some time. He’s smart and understands the game in all phases. When to rush, put his arms up, and how to close gaps in the running game while sealing the edge of the defense. He’s not the fastest recruit, but he’s got decent speed. Willard is in a really good spot and has earned his stripes.
