Continue ReadingNow that I have listed out the 2022 Kentucky All-State teams from 1A to 3A, it is now time to focus on the bigger and more notable schools that are in 4A to 6A. Although I already mentioned in my other All-state team articles, Kentucky never seems to lack any sort of talent in all positions. Especially when we begin to look at the bigger schools that face tougher competition, you will begin to see the best of the best face each other off. With that being said, these players will be able to truly show if they got the talent to play ball at the next level. Today, I will be listing out the players for the Kentucky All-State Team for Class 4A. I will be using the Kentucky High School Athletic Association (KHSAA) database to cover player individual statistics (Offensive linemen’s statistics are not included in the database). *Note: some of these players are not on the KHSAA database but were still chosen by me to add them to the ranking solely for their talent*
QB: Tate Rice | 6-0, 165lbs. Class of 2024 | Clay County High School, KY | Tape:
KHSAA QB Ranking: #8
2021 Football Season Stats: 63.9% completions for 1,518 passing yards, 18 passing touchdowns, 5 rushing touchdowns, and 6 interceptions in 11 games played.
Tate plays extremely well when running out of the pocket and/or making quick-decision throws. The junior tied for 4th in passing touchdowns in class 4A ball and a lot of these touchdowns were redzone routes when he was throwing out of the pocket. Tates playstyle resembles a lot of NFL quarterbacks who are most successful when advancing the football out of the pocket as quickly as possible to gain yardage. He can pass the ball as far and accurately throwing on the run than if he were a pocket passer. Along with that, Tates footwork and running mechanics mimic that of a varsity starting running back which enables him to effectively gain rushing yards and rushing touchdowns. Tate is an amazing dual-threat QB who would fit perfectly for any fast-paced offense looking to score touchdowns while the defense loses stamina.
RB: Mason Lawson Mason Lawson 6'2" | 195 lbs | ATH Johnson Central | 2023 State KY | 6-2,195lbs. Class of 2023 | Johnson Central High School, KY | Tape:
KHSAA RB Ranking: N/A
* 2021 Football Season Stats N/A*
Past Analysis: Mason is a huge threat to the defense once he finds an open field. The upcoming senior displays electrifying speed once he breaks free of the defense, racking up at least 20-30 yards per run. Also, Mason possesses solid block coverage whenever he plays off the ball. Although not playing as an o-lineman, Mason has the footwork and mechanics like an o-line to produce excellent blocking which is valuable for any offense to have in their arsenal. The many attributes this man has set the bar high for his interest from college coaches. I would be putting my money on Mason to be a great asset for any college football team looking for a productive running back both on and off the ball. I am eager to see what the future has in store for Mason after high school ball.
WR: Dakota Patterson Dakota Patterson 6'4" | 205 lbs | WR Boyle County | 2023 KY | 6-3, 190lbs. Class of 2023 | Corbin High School, KY | Tape:
KHSAA WR Ranking: 19th
2021 Football Season Stats: 32 receptions for 508 receiving yards and 3 touchdowns in 11 games played.
Past Analysis: Dakota is athletically gifted at the wide receiver position. Not only does he possess a tall frame for a wide receiver, but he is quick off his feet and can juke past a defender instantaneously. One factor that plays a role in all wide receivers is their ability to catch the ball properly. When watching Dakota play, it makes it hard to believe he is not using gloves laced up with glue. The junior can catch any ball thrown his way no matter how accurate the throw is.
OL: Bo Stinson OL | 6-2, 260lbs. Class of 2023 | Bourbon County High School, KY | Tape:
*KHSAA Stats N/A*
*2021 Football Stats N/A*
Past Analysis: Bo is an athletic guard that can provide solid blocking despite multiple players on him. His strength is not to be underestimated, as he will just run people over when he is opening a gap for the ball carrier. Bo also has quick acceleration off the line of scrimmage and can keep up with the ball carrier to block incoming DBs. His determination to protect his quarterback is easily noticed, as he puts his body on the line every snap. Although he already received a DIII offer to Union College, I would easily be looking to offer this kid if I were recruiting for any JUCO or DIII school at the least.
DB: Liam Hutson | 6-0, 160lbs. Class of 2023 | North Oldham High School, KY | Tape:
KHSAA Interceptions Ranking: #1
2021 Defensive Football Stats: 8 interceptions in 11 games played (3 of those returning for touchdowns).
Liam is an exceptional free safety who can read off quarterbacks like reading out of a children’s book. The senior led the entire state 4A class in total interceptions playing for the North Oldham defensive squad. His position timing is on the dot whenever the quarterback throws the ball near his zone. Because of that, he can get to the right spot to pick off the ball with little difficulty. He also plays wide receiver for his team which helps him pick off passes as if he’s receiving the ball from his quarterback. This makes it nearly impossible for any quarterback to be comfortable throwing the football near his vicinity. He even returned 3 of those picks for touchdowns which led the state in that category as well. If he continues to play the same way he did last season, I have no doubt he will reach the double-digit mark for total interceptions by the end of the season.
LB: Lee Shelton | 6-3, 215lbs. Class of 2023 | Wayne County High School, KY | Tape:
KHSAA LB Ranking: Unranked
*2021 Defensive Season Stats N/A*
Past Analysis: Lee is an incredibly strong and athletic force playing the middle linebacker position. Whenever the defense switches to the blitz coverage, the leader of the pack usually consist of Lee as he comes in like an absolute wrecking ball toward the opposing quarterback. It’s fun to watch Lee rush on a blitz because it’s like watching an angry bull that just got loose. Since Lee acts as the leader of the blitz, he is also the leader directing man coverage on a pass, having impressive zone reads, and identifying where the ball is going to go before the pass is thrown. With his physicality to tackle the ball carrier and his high team IQ, Lee is an elite LB that I can easily see playing DI ball somewhere, even though he has already received a D1 offer so far.
DL: Byron May Byron May 6'3" | 235 lbs | DL Rowan County | 2023 State KY | 6-2, 235lbs. Class of 2023 | Rowan County High School | Tape:
KHSAA Sacks Ranking: 1st
2021 Defensive Season Stats: 15.5 total sacks & 20.5 tackles for loss in 11 Games played.
Past Analysis: Byron is a menace to opposing offensive linemen as an edge rusher. The junior Defensive End recently tied 2nd in state for total sacks recorded (15.5 sacks). What makes Byron nearly impossible to block is his hand skills and ability to push off the opposing lineman with ease. Many notable NFL star defensive ends primarily to create space by using their hands to push off the opposing guards. For Byron, he can gain leverage and beat low blocks with his incredible hand skills. Along with that, Byron is pretty quick off his feet which allows him to get to the quarterback quicker. Keep an eye out for Byron May Byron May 6'3" | 235 lbs | DL Rowan County | 2023 State KY to continue causing pressure on opposing offenses this fall.
