Diego Avila Diego Avila 5'6" | 160 lbs | RB Belen | 2024 State NM , Belen: The Belen running back was one of the fastest players at the Elite 150 Combine in Albuquerque earlier this summer. He was also one of the best athletes, winning the awards for highest vertical jump and longest broad jump. Avila showed off his speed Thur. night in Belen’s 52-0 romp past Manzano, rushing for 140+ yards and scoring on three TD runs.
Eli Asay Eli Asay WR Carlsbad | 2023 State NM , Carlsbad; Asay is definitely on of the fastest players in southern New Mexico, running the 40 in the 4.4-4.5 range. He finished fifth in the 100 meter finals at the Class 5A state track & field meet in May (11.03) and sixth in the 200 meters finals (22.56).
Gabriel Buie Gabriel Buie 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB La Cueva | 2023 State NM , La Cueva: Buie is a powerful running back for La Cueva but he’s also very fast, which is why FCS Valparaiso has offered. He reached the finals of the 100 meters at the 5A state track meet in May. He ran the 40 in 4.5 seconds at the ENMU camp in June.
Jabalani Cooper, Albuquerque High: Cooper was flying under the radar in recruiting circles until he ran a 4.5 40 at the ENMU camp in early June. Then he ran the fastest 40 time at the Elite 150 Combine and won the 3-man ‘Fastest Camper’ race. All three in-state D2 schools have offered.
Melaki Gutierrez (Los Alamos): Gutierrez won the Class 4A state championships in the 100 meters (10.96 seconds) and 200 meters (22.17) at the state meet in May.
Javyn Morales Javyn Morales 5'10" | 155 lbs | RB Goddard | 2023 State NM , Goddard: Morales suffered a serious leg injury last fall and missed the entire second half of the season. He showed at the state track & field meet in May that he’s regaining has speed. When the knee fully heals, Morales should again become one of the fastest players in the state.
Marquise Renfro Marquise Renfro 5'11" | 160 lbs | WR Atrisco Heritage | 2024 State NM , Atrisco Heritage: Renfro routinely runs the 40 in the 4.4-4.5 range at practice and testing. He showe doff that’s p[eed last week in Atrisco’s openr vs. Sandia.
Kaden Trevino Kaden Trevino 5'11" | 175 lbs | WR Hobbs | 2023 State NM , Hobbs: Not only is Trevino one of the state’s top wide receivers, he’s one of the fastest too. He reached the Class 5A final in the 100 meters at the state meet and ran just a shade over 11 seconds. For a guy who’s nearly 6 feet tall and weighs 175 pounds, that’s very good. He also reached the finals in the 200 meters.
Nic Trujillo Nic Trujillo 6'1" | 160 lbs | WR Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: Here’s why New Mexico offered Trujillo: He’s 6-foot-1 and runs the 40 in sub-4.5 seconds. The Lobos are glad he’s staying home and keeping that type of speed in Albuquerque.
Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: Wyson will likely join Trujillo at the wide receiver spot when they report to the Lobos next summer. Right now, Wysong is arguably the fastest quarterback in the state. He won the Class 5A 200 meters title at the state meet in May with a blazing time of 21.93 seconds. He also finished third in the 100.
Special Mention: La Cueva freshman Tanner Montano was one of the fastest players at the Elite 150 Combine earlier this summer. But he is not listed on the Bears’ varsity roster. Presumably, he is playing JV this season.
