It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Vian Wolverines. One of the top teams in Class 2A over the last decade is back in the top five and expect to contend for a gold ball.
Vian Wolverines (2A Preseason Ranking: #5)
At this point it shouldn’t be a surprise that the Vian Wolverines are one of the top teams coming into a season in Class 2A. This has been one of the best teams in 2A football over the last decade and they’re once again one of the top contenders in 2022. The 2021 season didn’t end the way they would have liked after falling in the second round to Beggs. However, it wasn’t all bad. The Wolverines were able to capture another district championship, have another 10-win season and their defense was pretty stout throughout the year. They finished the year with four shutouts on the season but this year’s defense will have to be retooled after they graduate the majority of their starters.
The Wolverines bring back just four starters on the defensive side of the ball but like we mentioned at the top, this has been one of the top programs in 2A football over the last decade. If you think that the Wolverines won’t be able to reload on that side of the ball, you’re fooling yourself. Then you take a look at the offense and Vian will bring back six starters on that side of the ball, including a ton of experience in the backfield with their quarterback and one of the top running backs in 2A football. The non-district schedule is absolutely brutal once again but that’s nothing new for the Wolverines. But after they get by that portion of the schedule, they should be rather dominant in their district as they are the heavy favorites to capture another district crown.

. Last year, Mays was outstanding and could not be kept out of the end zone. He was one of the top players in the state when it came to touchdowns scored and he should be at it again this fall. Last year, he ran for nearly 1,600 yards and 27 touchdowns. He also added three touchdowns receiving and nearly had 2,000 yards of total offense. We expect the Wolverines to feed Mays more this fall and between rushing and receiving yards, he could easily eclipse the 2,000 yard mark. Especially if Vian is in the title hunt and play 15 games.

has been a Wolverine prospect on our radar since his freshman season. Ramos returns for his senior season and is ready to lead the Wolverines back to UCO and back to playing for a state championship. As a quarterback and defensive back, Ramos has a big impact on the game and he looks like he’s gotten bigger since the end of last season. At the quarterback position, Ramos threw for over 1,300 yards and 15 touchdowns. He’s also an excellent baseball player and has become a legitimate prospect in that sport. But between Ramos and Mays, the Wolverines are going to have one athletic backfield.

Earlier this year, we did a new series “Friday Film Review” in March and April. The premise was simple. Check out prospects all across the state on film and break down their games. One of the top 2023 linemen that we got a chance to cover was Vian’s

. We didn’t know much about the big man going into the evaluation and we came away very impressed. Whether it’s on offense or defense, Ross is an absolute mauler on the line of scrimmage. Vian is a town and a program that takes pride in playing tough football, especially in the trenches. Ross is a good representative of that and he should be a lineman to watch this fall.

2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 26 – Washington
– One of the best week zero games will take place in Vian, Oklahoma as the #5 Wolverines will welcome in 2A’s #1 Washington. The Warriors have made it to back to back title games and had to settle for the silver ball. They come into this season hungry for a state championship and this week zero match-up could very well be a playoff preview as both teams have state title aspirations. It’s also going to be a match-up of two of the best running backs in Class 2A.

Sept. 2 – AT Eufaula
Sept. 9 – Lincoln Christian
– We mentioned how the Wolverines like to test themselves in non-district play. Those tests continue and wrap up with a week two clash against Lincoln Christian, the top ranked team in Class 3A. The Bulldogs are the second #1 team that Vian will be facing in three weeks so they’ll know exactly where they are and what they need to improve on before they enter district play. This also could be the last real test before the playoffs as Vian could dominate their district. But they’ve not had much luck going up against Lincoln Christian over the last several years. They’ll try to slow down their high-powered offense in this week two clash.
Sept. 23 – AT Warner
Sept. 30 – Roland
Oct. 7 – Okemah
Oct. 13 – AT Henryetta
Oct. 21 – AT Keys
Oct. 28 – Prague
Nov. 4 – AT Tahlequah Sequoyah
Notable
The Wolverines had their streak of 10-win seasons cut short in 2020 but they got back to double digit victories in 2021. They also kept another important streak alive last fall. For the 11th consecutive season, Vian won at least one playoff game. The Wolverines have been one of the best and consistent teams in Class 2A over the last decade. The only thing that is waiting for them is a state championship. During that decade stretch, they’ve only made it to one state championship game. Class 2A is once again going to be very competitive this year and Vian will still be one of those championship contenders. The Wolverines are tired of being just considered contenders. They want to have a season end with them raising the gold ball.
