Independence Day Weekend is a great time for prospects to make their verbal commitments, and we saw plenty of impressive peach-state players announce their commitments over the last several days.
Dontavius Braswell Dontavius Braswell 5'11" | 210 lbs | RB Washington County | 2023 State GA – RB – Washington County
In a giant recruiting surprise, Braswell, one of the state’s top running backs, made his commitment to South Carolina this weekend, a school that didn’t make Braswell’s top group of schools. The speedy back claimed an offer from Alabama, ams after taking official visits to South Carolina, Maryland, Louisville, and Boston College, the 5-foot-11 200-pounder decided to stay down South and play for the Gamecocks in the SEC. He’s one of the fastest backs in the South and he’s bring some quickness and explosiveness to an up and coming Gamecock program. Braswell is ranked as the No. 2 RB prospect in Georgia in the latest 2023 Prep Redzone Rankings

RJ Johnson RJ Johnson 6'3" | 180 lbs | DB Eagle's Landing | 2023 State GA – QB – Westlake
One of the top QB prospects in Atlanta, Johnson is a big-armed quarterback with plenty of size at 6-foot-2 200-pounds who committed to Toledo this weekend over offers from East Carolina, Florida Atlantic, Georgia Southern, among others. He’s an efficient, accurate quarterback who is coming off a great junior season where he threw for close to 2,700 yard ands 25 touchdowns last fall. He’s also a threat as a runner where he rushed for 280 yards and 7 more touchdowns. He’s one of the most productive quarterbacks in the area and now he’ll play at the D1 level when the time comes.

Ricky Lee Ricky Lee 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Cedar Grove | 2023 State GA – DB – Cedar Grove
A dynamic, sure-handed defensive back and one of the very best in Atlanta, Lee was outstanding as a junior last year for Cedar Grove, helping lead one of the state’s top defenses to a state championship last fall. A technically sound cornerback with great footwork and natural cover skills, Lee committed to UCONN this weekend over offers from Colorado, Duke, Bowling Green, among others. He’s a good athlete and plays the ball well in the air, and has a solid frame at 5-foot-11 170-pounds. He can match up with bigger receivers and will help anchor one of the best secondary units in Georgia for the 2022 season.

Barry Jackson Barry Jackson 5'11" | 175 lbs | ATH Cedar Grove | 2023 State GA – WR – Cedar Grove
One of the top athletes from an impressive Cedar Grove team, Jackson was excellent with the ball in his hands with game-changing speed on offense. The 5-foot-11 175-pound receiver is a sure-handed wideout who can line up in multiple positions offensively, and when he has the ball, he’s looking to score. He always had D1 potential and talent, and now he’s committed to Nebraska. The Atlanta-area receiver caught 28 passes last year for 510 pounds and scored 7 touchdowns. He committed to the Cornhuskers this past weekend over offers from Memphis, Duke, Arkansas State, among others. He’s fast, gets open consistently, and should see a lot more passes come his way as a senior in 2022.

Tyree Weathersby Tyree Weathersby 6'4" | 250 lbs | DL New Manchester | 2023 State GA – DL – New Manchester
A quick, strong interior defensive line prospect who consistently finds his way into the backfield, the Douglasville native has plenty of length and quickness for some one on the interior, and he was a game-wrecker last fall, making 57 tackles, 7 TFLs, and 6 sacks. The Region 6-AAAAA Defensive Player of the Year took an official visit to Tennessee the weekend of June 24th and that was all he needed to see. Weathersby committed to Tennessee over offers from Boston College, UCONN, among others. He’s a versatile lineman who can line up anywhere along the defensive line, and he has plenty of time to add more weight and muscle before he gets to Knoxville next year.
