Continue ReadingIt’s not everyday that area legends come back to Omaha to host football camps, so when NELITE announced they were teaming up with Raven’s Passing Game Specialist & Former Nebraska WRs coach Keith Williams, it became the MUST attend camp of the season. Coach Williams didn’t just bring his expertise, but also brought some of his friends and WR alum. Joining him in attendance were former Husker’s QB Tommy Armstrong Jr., WR Stanley Morgan (current WR for Cincinnati Bengals), WR DeMornay Pierson-El. Players with ages ranging from middle school to current college players packed Bellevue West football field to soak up as much knowledge and wisdom from this star-studded group of coaches.
Over the two day camp, I saw a lot of talented players striving to get better on every rep and a lot of high-effort performances from a lot of kids. I will be doing a few features highlighting some of the players I thought stood out throughout the camp.
Malachi Coleman Malachi Coleman 6'5" | 195 lbs | WR Lincoln East | 2023 State NE – 2023 – Lincoln East – 6’5″ 180 lbs
The top ranked prospect in the state, Malachi Coleman Malachi Coleman 6'5" | 195 lbs | WR Lincoln East | 2023 State NE , continued to be his usual dominant self at the Wideouts camp. The biggest standout of Malachi’s game is his sheer size and length. He made some insane catches away from his body and can elevate to go up and make the snag. Coleman is explosive shooting off the line of scrimmage with the strength and length to beat the press, once he’s done so, he turns on the jets and is downfield in a flash. What people should be scared of is the fact that Malachi was really trying to nail his footwork to be smoother in and out of breaks and was frequently asking questions. A big man like Malachi getting faster at changing direction…. good luck covering that.
Juan Matos Juan Matos WR Bellevue West | 2024 State NE – 2024 – Millard South
One of the biggest standouts during the whole camp was up-and-coming Patriots WR Juan Matos Juan Matos WR Bellevue West | 2024 State NE . The thing that I think stood out most was his ability to take what the coaches were saying and apply it to his next rep. He took advantage of the opportunity to get better with every rep. On top of being coachable, Juan has legit skills as a wideout. His twitch and footwork were really impressive and could make him one of the top slot receivers in his class. Juan also showcased his great hands by catching nearly everything thrown his way. He is a precise route runner and can attack at all levels of the fields and in between the hashes. If Juan continues to implement what he learned at the camp, you can expect him to make lots of catches for the Patriots.
Jaylen Lloyd Jaylen Lloyd 5'10" | 160 lbs | WR Omaha Westside | 2023 State NE – 2023 – Omaha Westside – 5’10″ 160 lbs
Westside WR Jaylen Lloyd Jaylen Lloyd 5'10" | 160 lbs | WR Omaha Westside | 2023 State NE , nicknamed “Ferrari” by the coaches at the camp, was a player that made improvements from day one to day two of the camp. A little extra coaching from Coach Williams helped him bring more attention to the finer details of footwork and being a receiver. Jaylen wasted no time implementing these tips and was making improvements with every drill and rep. One thing you can always expect from Jaylen is for him to be a menace on deep throws. His speed is just natural and explosive, which will be huge in the Westside offense.
Owen Bogacz Owen Bogacz 5'8" | 155 lbs | WR Papillion-La Vista | 2025 State NE – 2025 – Papillion – La Vista – 5’8″ 140 lbs
One player that really snuck up on me was Papio sophomore Owen Bogacz Owen Bogacz 5'8" | 155 lbs | WR Papillion-La Vista | 2025 State NE . You can tell Owen has spent quite a bit of time on his craft by the way he does a lot of the little things right. Don’t let the picture below fool you, he does a great job keeping his eye on the ball as he secures the ball. He was one of the receivers that I saw catch nearly every pass coming his way. He is quick and explosive when he comes out of his breaks and finds his way back to the ball. He’s only a sophomore, so I will be keeping very close eyes on Owen’s progression in the upcoming years. Bogacz’s performance at the camp has certainly earned him a spot on the upcoming 2025 class rankings.
Gio Contreras Gio Contreras 6'0" | 180 lbs | ATH Bellevue West | 2023 State NE (RB/ATH) – 2023 – Bellevue West – 6’0″ 180 lbs
Bellevue West has arguably the deepest wide receiver room in the state, and just for good measure, they’ll have one of the top pass-catching running backs in the state as well. Gio doesn’t just have great hands for a RB but might have some of the best hands, period. Contreras is a smooth route runner that can secure the catch and then explode upfield and pile up some YAC. His stop-and-go speed is something defenses really need to watch out for, because Contreras looked very sharp in drills focusing on breaks and changing direction. Gio’s versatility and athleticism is going to provide Bell West coaches the ability to add as many wrinkles to the offense as possible.
Daniel Kaelin Daniel Kaelin 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Bellevue West | 2024 State NE (QB) – 2024 – Bellevue West – 6’3″ 195 lbs
The top-ranked QB in the 2024 class, Bellevue West QB Daniel Kaelin Daniel Kaelin 6'3" | 195 lbs | QB Bellevue West | 2024 State NE , was dishing out dimes at the two-day camp. Kaelin’s passing looked very sharp during routes on air, and he was making some high-level throws. Daniel’s accuracy is very impressive, along with his ability to drop the ball right on the money on difficult outside and deep throws. One thing I also noted was that Daniel’s footwork and mobility look like it has improved this offseason. He looked comfortable running through drills and does a good job keeping his eyes up and on his receivers downfield. This performance was a great preview of what to expect from Daniel this season.
