Mission Viejo beat some of the state’s top teams to win the Battle at the Beach passing tournament last Saturday at Edison High in Huntington Beach.
The Diablos beat Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals, Mater Dei in the semifinals and St. John Bosco in the championship game.
Mission Viejo’s offense was spectacular as expected, but the secondary shined and was instrumental in the team’s championship run. Tesoro transfer Mikey D’Amato had an interception in the endzone against Bosco in the championship game.
[player_tooltip player_id="270905" first="Treyvon" last="Tolmaire"] had a big interception against Los Alamitos in the quarterfinals. 6-foot-3 sophomore defensive back Dijon Lee Jr. is a sophomore to watch this season and [player_tooltip player_id="310030" first="Joseph" last="Libutti"] is a speedy senior who is reliable back there.

Travis Anderson, Carter Boskovich and Roman Hardin are all versatile guys who will get playing time in the Diablos’ secondary this season.
Offensively, Ball State commit [player_tooltip player_id="25441" first="Kadin" last="Semonza"] was clean all day and threw two touchdowns in the championship game to [player_tooltip player_id="261773" first="KJ" last="Reed"] and Arizona commit [player_tooltip player_id="190360" first="Jackson" last="Holman"].

Top prospect [player_tooltip player_id="25408" first="Mikey" last="Matthews"] caught the game-winning touchdown pass from Semonza on the final play of the game to beat Mater Dei in the semifinals. In my opinion, Matthews has an opportunity to be a top five receiver in Southern California this season and put up massive numbers.

Andrez Lewis had a touchdown against Los Alamitos and could be a sleeper receiver this season. [player_tooltip player_id="261722" first="Edward" last="Schultz"], a Colorado commit and JSerra transfer, could be the team’s fourth receiving option this season which is very dangerous.
The Diablos will host their own passing league tournament this Saturday which will feature some teams that competed at the Battle at the Beach.
