After a summer filled with college visits, multiple peach-state prospects have decided to make their college commitments so they can focus on their high school football season for the rest of the fall.
Here are some prospects in Georgia who recently made their college commitments.
Caleb Downs Caleb Downs 5'11" | 180 lbs | DB Mill Creek | 2023 State GA – Defensive Back – Mill Creek
The top-ranked prospect in the entire state, Downs is a ball-hawking safety who checks every box coaches look for at the position. He’s quick, instinctive, has tremendous ball skills, and has natural playmaking ability. An easy 5-star prospect and one of the top defensive backs in the entire 2023 class, Downs could’ve played anywhere he wanted, and in the end, the Mill Creek standout committed to Alabama over Georgia and Ohio State. The outstanding safety made 77 tackles last season as a junior along with five INTs. He has NFL written all over him and should have a brilliant career in Tuscaloosa starting in 2023. Until then, look for him to help push Mill Creek to a special season this fall as a senior.
CJ Heard CJ Heard 6'0" | 200 lbs | DB Woodward Academy | 2024 State GA – Safety – Woodward Academy
A playmaking sophomore safety with size and instincts, the Atlanta native had a really productive sophomore season showing range in coverage, along with the ability to come down and help against the run. He stands out physically as a sophomore at 5-foot-11 190-pounds with a long, lean frame. He tackles well around the feet and ankles and does a nice job of chasing down the ball carrier on the edge. He’s a true safety with range in the passing game and has a great motor to the ball. During the 2021 season, Heard made 35 tackles, broke up eight passes, forced two fumbles, scored on a pick-six, and made one sack. Heard had plenty of impressive offers to choose from, but the Woodward Academy ended up committing to Florida State over offers from Arkansas, Oklahoma, Purdue, among others.
Jontae Gilbert Jontae Gilbert 6'1" | 165 lbs | DB Douglass | 2025 State GA – Defensive Back – Douglass
One of the top young prospects across Georgia for any position, Gilbert has great size for his age at 6-foot-1 175-pounds who plays with a physical presence. He’s strong and consistent in coverage in the back end and closes well down the field. With plenty of early offers on the table, The Atlanta native decided to commit early in the process to the Ohio State Buckeyes. Gilbert will fit right in at Ohio State as he’s a hard-hitting defender who can also help in the run game and on special teams. The Buckeyes always produce top defensive backs, so it’s easy to see why Gilbert wanted to jump on board.. He plays like an upperclassmen and has the size and athleticism to turn into one of the top 2025 defensive backs not only across the South, but across the country as well. He has a chance to have a gigantic sophomore season and will be able to make an impact in all three phases of the game this fall. Look for him to push for 5-star status down the road in the 2025 class.
Adonis Garcia Adonis Garcia 6'2" | 185 lbs | DB Woodstock | 2023 State GA – Woodstock
One of the top two-way prospects in Cobb County, Garcia is a long, athletic receiver and defensive back who was a bright spot for a struggling Woodstock program last fall. At 6-foot-2 185-pounds, Garcia has plenty of size and length to go with his impressive athleticism. He can hold his own as a defensive back as he covers a lot of ground and can cover bigger receivers. He shows good ball skills on offense and knows how to get up the field in a hurry. He’s excellent with the ball in his hands and made plays all season when given an opportunity. He held a handful of D1 offers, but in the end, Garcia decided to commit to the Appalachian State Mountaineers.
