It’s the month of July and that means it’s preview time! Throughout the month of July, we are publishing 100 team previews to get you ready for the 2022 season. This is something that began last year and has become even bigger and better this year. We’re looking forward to diving deep into the top teams across the state. From defending champs, to top contenders and dark horses, we’ll have complete coverage every single day with new teams from Class 6A down to A. In this post, we take a look at the Hominy Bucks. Hominy is once again one of the top teams in Class A with the majority of their starters returning.
Hominy Bucks (A Preseason Ranking: #8)
The Hominy Bucks are once again going to be in the hunt as we look at the 2022 football season in Class A. Hominy had a great start last season but would slip down the stretch and finish off the year 7-4 and lose in the first round of the playoffs to rival Pawhuska. The Bucks began the year 6-1, including a win over Pawhuska in week three. But Hominy would lose two of their last three to close out the regular season and would get blown out by the Huskies in the opening round of the playoffs. However, Hominy brings back nearly everyone from last season and will be one of the more experienced teams in Class A. Because of that, they’re hoping to capture another gold ball this fall.
The Bucks bring back eight starters on the offensive side of the ball, including one of the biggest breakout stars from last season in their starting quarterback. He’ll have plenty of familiar faces around him and because of that, look out for the Bucks to have one of the better and efficient offenses in Class A. On the defensive side of the ball, another eight starters return to Hominy and the Bucks will be able to be much improved on that side of the ball. The Bucks were in a very tough district last season and this year will be no different. Hominy is hoping to first contend in that district and then compete in Class A, which is incredibly wide open as we head into the season.

We mentioned how Hominy had a star quarterback who enjoyed a breakout season last fall and going back and looking at his sophomore numbers, it’s still incredibly impressive. Woods was one of the top performers several weeks during the year and it’s easy to see why when you look at the total numbers from last fall. He threw for over 2,500 yards and 20 touchdowns but would also add over 1,100 yards and 18 touchdowns on the ground. It’s not crazy to think that either this year or next year, Woods could be a player that accounts for over 1,500 yards in both passing and rushing. Coming into this season, Woods is one of the top playmakers in Class A.

. The versatile senior will bring a lot to the table for the Bucks this fall after an outstanding season last fall. Sutton finished with over 550 yards and six touchdowns on the ground but was also a threat out of the backfield as a receiver, where he finished with over 300 yards. Then you flip to the defensive side of the ball and Sutton was one of the team’s leaders with nearly 80 tackles on the season from his linebacker position. We’re expecting much of the same this year and for Sutton to be one of the top two-way players in Class A this fall.
More Names To Know
Chase Tindell – 2023 Linebacker
Ethane Wikel – 2023 Wide Receiver
Tristian Riddle – 2024 Offensive/Defensive Lineman
Xavier Perdue – 2023 Wide Receiver
2022 Schedule/Games To Circle
Aug. 26 – AT Kellyville
Sept. 1 – Cleveland
Sept. 9 – AT Pawhuska
– Despite Hominy and Pawhuska no longer being in the same class, the rivalry is still on and these two will meet up in week two. The two teams faced off twice last season and things did not go well in the playoff rematch for the Bucks. Hominy beat Pawhuska in a close one during the regular season but were blown out of the first round by the Huskies. With Pawhuska moving up to Class 2A, this match-up becomes much more of a pride game as well as a measuring stick game for both sides. Before Hominy takes a week off in week three and then opens a brutal district slate, they’ll get one more test as they hit the road to take on Pawhuska.
Sept. 23 – AT Pawnee
Sept. 30 – Oklahoma Union
Oct. 7 – AT Morrison
Oct. 13 – Chelsea
Oct. 21 – Tonkawa
Oct. 28 – AT Woodland
– Honestly we could have gone with three other district match-ups as Hominy’s district is once again absolutely stacked. Five teams, Hominy, Morrison, Pawnee, Tonkawa and Woodland have to all be considered playoff contenders and one of those teams will be on the outside looking in. Woodland is the top ranked team in the district heading into the season so the spotlight is on this week nine match-up as the Bucks travel to face off with Woodland in a game that no doubt will have massive playoff implications. Both teams have outstanding quarterbacks and we could very well see a shootout. This could also be a game that feels like a playoff game in the regular season.
Nov. 4 – Chouteau
Notable
It depends on how you look at the 2020 football season in Oklahoma but Hominy will be looking for their 25th consecutive playoff appearance or their 2nd consecutive appearance. Technically, Hominy participated in the 2020 playoffs but they never played a game. They advanced after their first playoff game against Afton was forfeited due to Covid. And the following week, they were scheduled to play Pawhuska but would forfeit because of Covid. So again, it depends on how you look at it. They were in the playoffs but never played in the playoffs. Our official opinion? They were in the playoffs and the streak remains intact. They’ll be looking for their 25th consecutive playoff appearance, dating back to the late 90’s.
