Last weekend at Grenada High School, Baltimore Ravens’ Offensive Lineman and Grenada HS Alum Tyre Phillips hosted a day camp for his hometown youth. The camp itself was in service to athletes in the surrounding community, allowing kids to work on their craft and learn from several NFL players. It was Phillip’s first year doing the camp, and the event was an overall success. There were campers in attendance varying in age from 6-18. The event itself doubled as a community fun day for the younger kids ages 13 and under, while JV and Varsity level athletes competed in drill work, 1v1’s, and 7 on 7.
I was honored to be a part of the experience and what it meant to the local families. The camp allowed me to assist in mentoring kids in the basic fundamentals of life and football. While attending the camp to scout up and coming talent, I was impressed with the outings put on display by several student-athletes. There were kids there that turned heads and earned much deserved recognition for their performances. I will get into the specifics as I detail which players made names for themselves and how they did just that. Along with Tyre Phillips; Jeffery Simmons, Martinas Rankin, JT Gray, Elgton Jenkins and a few more current and former NFL players assisted in making the camp a day to remember. This list of camp counselors provided an experience and moments for the OL/DL groups that were second to none.
Spencer Dowland | 2025 | OT | 6’6 290 | Athens HS (AL)
Spencer Dowland was probably one of the best young prospects at the camp as far as raw talent goes. The 2025 prospect received best Offensive Lineman honors. Dowland is an absolute giant that can carry his 6’6 290 pound frame seamlessly well. He has pretty impressive technique and bends well for a kid of his stature. Spencer has great strength with strong hands and a polished pass set to be just a sophomore. The force he strikes defenders with on his pass set is effective and violent, which is gold to OL coaches. He has a good sense of how to move in tight spaces thanks to his wrestling background. This kid was a joy to watch and he competed with almost all of the DL that were any competition to him. His feet were a bit slow at times, but Spencer’s overall strength and technique helped him win the majority of his 1v1s. Spencer Dowland is going to be a kid that you hear about in the near future. He is coach-able and loves to compete with high intensity. (Offfered By: UAB, Western Kentucky)
Trinston Lee | 2024 | DT | 6’0 270 | Rowlett HS (TX)
Mr.Lee was my favorite camper from the entire day simply due to the focus he attacked each rep with. He is listed at 6’0 but probably is closer to 5’11, but don’t let that fool you. Trinston is a player! He has swift feet and an arsenal of pass rush combos to go along with them. During the 1v1 session of the camp he was being individually coached and instructed by Jeffery Simmons. I was impressed with how well Trinston was taking what Simmons was telling him to do and instantly applying it to the next rep. He was the only defensive lineman there who gave Spencer Dowland any problems. His performance from him earned him the honor of being named the camp’s Defensive Linemen MVP. Lee can get off the ball with an extreme quickness and that allowed him to easily win several of his reps. He also understands his body and skill-set enough to turn his upper-body to evade the punch of offensive linemen. To make a long story short, Sipp Lee has a bag! He will surely turn heads come this fall as he continues to grind this off-season.
Jayden Ray | 2026 | DL/OL | Grenada HS
Jayden Ray is a strong young freshman with a great size and loads of potential. He is a pretty big kid to be only a 9th grader! I was unable to get exact measurements on him but Jayden has a solid frame and long arms that allowed him to make his presence felt last week. What stood out to me while Jayden competed in 1v1s was his strong hands when contacting the offensive lineman and his quick first step. Ray’s ability to use his hands displayed at this stage in his career was something to see. He will need to get faster as he progresses into the high school ranks, but I’m sure this will come based on Ray’s demeanor. During 1v1s he took each opportunity he could to ensure that he got as many looks as possible. I am looking forward to following Jayden’s playing career to see how he progresses in the future.
Quanterrion Bland | 2026 | OL | 6’2 285 | Winona HS
I was impressed by Quan during 1v1s as well. His feet get a bit lethargic, but he makes up for his deficiencies athletically with his effort and technique. Quan fires off of the ball with good leverage to get into his pass set, but he struggles to keep his hands inside at times. He is a physical kid that knows how to naturally how to use his size and leverage to move people. Though he struggles to play with tight hands, he has a fairly decent punch when contacting defenders. One thing that impressed me was his how purposeful he was with his movements. He was being mentored by Elgton Jenkins on what it means to set a pass rusher half a man. He was able to quickly grasp what Jenkins was telling him, which tells me that he is a coach-able kid. He will be a project of a player but with a bit of coaching and time spent, Bland will turn into an impressive recruit.
