Continue ReadingThe Beast of the Southeast is a very great camp for guys to come and get noticed. Last year thirty three of the campers received offers. It is a nice event to come compete and show that you have talent. There are kids from all over MS who drive to get to this camp. Some come from over three hours to get there. If you are a senior flying under the radar this camp can help get you a breakthrough during your last summer of camps. A freshman who had great promise can come there and make a name for himself very early on during their career. I was very impressed with what I saw in Wesson, MS yesterday.
Omari Johnson, 6-1 170, Wesson, 2026 DB, WR
Omari ran a 4.46 today. His other time was a 4.53. This kid has a lot of upside. He can play corner or he can play receiver. He has very nice hands and he attacks the ball very well. He does very well in and out of cuts. He played with their varsity last season as an 8th grader. He has a lot of heart and stepped up big for his team when they needed him. He is good on both sides of the ball. His speed helps him a lot on the field. He also is very athletic. He was in the 8th grade making jump ball catches on juniors and seniors. He has a nice frame to grow into and the sky is the limit for him. I think over the next four years he will be a name to keep up with.
Jarkea Reed, 6-0 160, Leake Central, 2023, WR
Jarkea is one of the guys who was very impressive today. He does very well in drills. He can move from side to side and dies a great job accelerating in and out of routes. He also has some nice hands. He has some long arms so I think he may be able to play some DB as well.
Wildrekus Johnson Wildrekus Johnson 6'3" | 190 lbs | ATH Tylertown | 2023 State MS , 6-4 190, Thomastown, WR, 2023
Wildrekus is a track star that knows how to pick his feet up and put them back down. He is a true 4.4 guy that ran a 4.47 today. He has a lot of athleticism and was very impressed today. He earned his way to be mentioned amongst the top 25 camper today. Johnson has great hands. When the ball is in the air he is very determined to make the catch. He makes it very hard to press. He knows how to come off the line and get receivers hands off of him. He has a very nice frame and still has some room to grow. With his size and speed he is going to be a problem for a lot of defenders this year. I think he runs good routes. He can use some work in that area. He definitely needs to make sure he uses good mechanics in and out of his cuts. He is tall so sometimes he does not get low enough to be explosive on his turns. He also has a habit of selling which direction he is going by his body language. I think he does a great job of catching the fade ball at the highest point, but he needs to do better with tucking the ball away. He was making some very acrobatic catches today, but the ones that the defenders were able to get to where due to him not properly tucking the ball. Overall he had a very great day.
Gavin Drones, 5-10 170, Magee, DB, 2023
Gavin had a great camp today as well. He ran a 4.55 and a 4.53 today. He can definitely reach the 4.49 range with a more explosive takeoff. Gavin plays DB and does well at the safety and cornerback position. He plays the game with a lot of swag. He can break very well when he is coming out of his back pedal. He does a great job of defending the pass. He studies receivers very well. I like how makes sure he goes for after the football aggressively, but not getting a pass interference. He knows how to play well against taller receivers too. When defending the jump fade route he doesn’t panic when he can tell the ball is in the air. He gets his head around and finds the ball and makes his move. He does a great job at attacking receivers hands in the air not allowing them to make circus catches. He needs to work better at taking away the inside from receivers. Today it was a few time where he found himself in some bad spots when the receivers broke in on the slant. I think if he doesn’t get carried away in the shuffling receivers do to throw you off he will be ok.
Hunter Hester Hunter Hester 5'10" | 160 lbs | ATH Mantachie | 2023 State MS , 5-9 160, Mantachie, WR, 2023
Hunter is blazing fast and his also very quick. I’m always excited to see him perform. He is a guy that is very good at running routes. He knows how to set his routes up. He is going to be a guy that will have a lot of yards after the catch this year. He loves to compete and he does not shy away from reps. He is a guy that likes to be upfront and getting some action. I love how he uses great mechanics in and out of cuts. He makes sure stays good and square and makes hard turns. He has a nice set of hands as well. He can make a lot of hard catches and makes it easy for the QB. He knows how to read coverages very well too. He knows when to find the open space of the zone and isn’t quick to try to overdo things. Look for him to have a big year.
