Recruiters have been hard at work this summer searching for prospects in this upcoming senior class, and lucky for them, we’re highlighting three more under the radar seniors they should consider keeping an eye on. It’s also never too early for them to take a peak at the Class of ’24. This second film session features one versatile junior with some major upside on both sides of the ball.
Mason White – Andover Central, 6’0”, 175, DB, Class of ’23
Andover Central boasted a stout defense last season, and they’ll look to maintain that level of play with prospects like Mason White leading the way this fall. White was one of Central’s top defensive backs during their state title run in 2021, and returns as one of their leading tacklers from last season. He typically patrols the field back at safety, but has also shown he’s capable of guarding the slot. White does a great job of sticking to the opposition’s hip in coverage, and tracks the ball to force incompletions. He’s not a physical tackler, but he does put himself in position to make plays. His play from his junior year and his performance during offseason camps has already earned him multiple offers, and he should see more come his way throughout this season.
Keller Hurla – St. Marys, 6’0”, 165, QB, Class of ’23
Keller Hurla is truly one of the most underrated well-rounded athletes in the entire state of Kansas. The multi-sport athlete had a very impressive junior year; particularly on the gridiron where he shined in year two as the starting quarterback for St. Marys. Hurla’s numbers drastically improved across the board from his sophomore year, and he helped lead the Bears to a three win increase. His playmaking ability makes him dangerous. He can extend plays when the pocket collapses, and he manages to find his receivers even when defenders are closing in. Defenses have to account for Hurla’s legs as well. Whether by design, or from scrambling; Hurla can break a defense down when he pulls the ball to run. He should be one of the top offensive players in Class 1A this season.
Wyatt Spexarth – Andale, 6’3”, 175, QB, Class of ’23
The way the Andale Indians have dominated over the last few years is unique considering how the game of football has changed from an offensive standpoint. They favor a ground-and-pound approach, which sometimes leaves Wyatt Spexarth as an overlooked signal caller. But Spexarth is a player that checks his ego at the door and makes winning plays. When called on to throw, Spexarth can quickly find his read and delivers an accurate ball. He displays solid awareness in the pocket, and uses his lengthy frame to see over the defense. An underrated aspect of his game is his toughness. He’s bound to take some lumps in this offense, but he has the poise to make tough throws under pressure. The young man is a winner, and could take control of an offense at the next level.
Wesley Edison – Free State, 6’3”, 210, ATH, Class of ’24
Like most programs throughout the state this year, Free State will be looking for it’s next starting quarterback. Wesley Edison should be a strong candidate for the job, and could have a similar impact that Jet Dineen had last season. Edison isn’t quite as explosive as Dineen, but he does have the ability to be a playmaker on both sides of the ball. As a sophomore, Edison was a reliable safety for the Firebirds during their playoff run. He also had some opportunities to showcase his skills under center. But this offseason he’s really been able to display his arm. This short clip is only one throw, but his arm strength is definitely attention grabbing. Look for Edison to put folks on notice as a junior.
