We continue with our ‘City Series’ by taking a look at the Top 5 linebackers in northern New Mexico:
[player_tooltip player_id="138091" first="Ace" last="Gonzalez"], Robertson: Gonzalez was an absolute stud on defense for the Cardinals in 2021, amassing nearly 150 tackles for the Class 3A champions. With 213 career tackles in two seasons (Las Vegas schools opted out of the abbreviated spring 2021 season), Gonzalez has a chance to surpass 300 tackles before his career ends.
[player_tooltip player_id="275452" first="Markus" last="Attencio"], Aztec: Attencio enjoyed a solid sophomore season with 25 tackles and already has two years of varsity experience heading into his junior campaign. Aztec has the talent to turn things around quickly after struggling in 2021. Being in the same district as regional rivals Bloomfield, Gallup and Kirtland Central promises plenty of competitive games.
[player_tooltip player_id="275569" first="Jesse" last="Seitsinger"], Bloomfield: Seitsinger is another rising 2024 prospect in northern New Mexico. He collected 65 tackles, 6 QB hurries and 3 sacks as a sophomore in 2021. He’ll look to keep wreaking havoc on opposing offenses in 2022. Bloomfield has a lot of experience returning this season after finishing 10-2 last fall.
[player_tooltip player_id="275598" first="Jerome" last="Martinez"], Taos: Northern New Mexico is loaded with outstanding 2024 linebacker prospects and Martinez is another promising player coming off a strong sophomore campaign. Martinez had 72 tackles in 2021. The Taos defense has the look of being stellar in 2022. The defensive front seven will be nasty. The Tigers’ season opener at St. Michael’s on Aug. 20 is a marquee 4A-3A matchup.
[player_tooltip player_id="275602" first="Santiago" last="Quintana"], Los Alamos: The Hilltoppers reached the Class 5A playoffs in 2021 and Quintana played an integral role in their success with 61 tackles and 5 TFL. Keep producing at that level and the 6-foot-0, 175-pound rising junior should have college coaches making the trip to Los Alamos. And they won’t be going there to tour the National Laboratory.
HONORABLE MENTION: [player_tooltip player_id="269606" first="Anderson" last="Weese"] (Raton); [player_tooltip player_id="138057" first="John" last="Villareal"] (Aztec); [player_tooltip player_id="269607" first="Auggie" last="Aguilar"] (Bloomfield); [player_tooltip player_id="269618" first="Andreas" last="Gordo"] (Bloomfield); [player_tooltip player_id="275121" first="Dylan" last="Joines"] (Miyamura); [player_tooltip player_id="340344" first="Quik" last="Cordova"] (Robertson); [player_tooltip player_id="275596" first="Isaiah" last="Ortiz"] (West Las Vegas); [player_tooltip player_id="340350" first="Pablo" last="Montano"] (West Las Vegas); Randon Matthews (Kirtland Central); Michael Serrano (Santa Fe).
