Tavon Archibald Tavon Archibald 6'0" | 170 lbs | DB West Mesa | 2024 State NM , West Mesa: One of the best things we’ve seen on Twitter in the past few days is Archibald pulling a 10,000 truck as part of his summer workouts. He’s also an outstanding student and has maintained above a 3.5 GPA throughout high school. Archibald, one of the standouts for the New Mexico Legacy 7×7 team, will play safety and nickel for the new-look Mustangs, who will have a new head coach in 2022.
Shawn Armijo Shawn Armijo 5'11" | 160 lbs | LB Bernalillo | 2024 State NM , Bernalillo: The Bernalillo defense was outstanding for most of the 2021 season and the Spartans should be very good again on that side of the ball in 2022. Armijo had 62 tackles, 18 TFL, 5 sacks and 5 QB hurries from his outside linebacker spot. Bernalillo might be just a Class 4A but their defensive front seven will make some 6A schools envious.
Mason Espinda-McChriston Mason Espinda-McChriston 6'2" | 175 lbs | ATH Bernalillo | 2024 State NM -McChriston, Bernalillo: Espinda got some valuable varsity experience under his belt last season as a sophomore, finishing as Bernalillo’s second leading receiver with 17 receptions for 281 yards. This spring, he’s excelled for Bernalillo’s 7×7 teams and running track. He was impressive at a 7×7 jamboree in April with several leaping catches. The Spartans’ leading receiver from 2021 is graduating so look for Espinda-McChriston to have a much larger role this coming season. He should be Bernalillo‘s leading WR in 2022.
Koa Hoshijo Koa Hoshijo 6'2" | 190 lbs | DL Las Cruces | 2024 State NM , Las Cruces: Hoshijo is one of the state’s top 2024 defensive end prospects and started for the Bulldawgs at that position in 2021. Las Cruces coach Mark Lopez loves his versatility. The Bulldawgs will have one of the best defensive lines in the state this coming season and Hoshijo is a major reason why.
Bishop Ortega, Cleveland: Playing rugby in addition to excelling for the New Mexico Legacy 7×7 team, Ortega has enjoyed a fantastic spring. He could be the next great receiver at Cleveland. Right now, in the wake of the departures of three seniors, the Storm need a reliable No. 2 WR behind Nic Trujillo Nic Trujillo 6'1" | 160 lbs | WR Cleveland | 2023 State NM for the 2022 season and Ortega appears ready to make a serious run at the job. Watching him run crisp routes and catch passes for the New Mexico Legacy 7×7 team, he’s got the size and skills to become a top-notch WR.
Isaiah Ortiz Isaiah Ortiz 5'6" | LB West Las Vegas | 2024 State NM , West Las Vegas: The Dons are more than just a prolific offense led by QB C.J. Perea. They have a very good defense as well and Ortiz will be one of the leaders of that unit in 2022 after amassing 79 tackles from his outside linebacker spot in 2021. The Dons will look to dethrone crosstown rival Robertson, which captured the 2021 Class 3A title last November.
Jason Ussery Jason Ussery 6'3" | 185 lbs | DB Los Lunas | 2024 State NM , Los Lunas: As a sophomore in 2021, Ussery saw limited playing time with the Los Lunas varsity. But he’s taken his game to the next level with the New Mexico Legacy 7×7 team and a special training program. Ussery looks primed to become a regular in the Tigers’ secondary as they transition to Class 6A. Ussery has good size (6-2, 185), runs track and has a weighted GPA above 4.0. If Ussery has a solid season in 2022, college coaches will definitely come calling.
Dominic Valencia Dominic Valencia 6'2" | 170 lbs | LB Rio Rancho | 2024 State NM , Rio Rancho: Quarterback and linebacker is a unique combination requiring different skill sets but Valencia appears to master the demands. Right now, he’s battling to become the starting quarterback for Rio Rancho. If he doesn’t, he’ll play LB instead. Either way, Valencia should be a key player for the Rams this coming season as a junior.
