Continue ReadingEarlier today we released the updated rankings for the 2023 class. As always, some players moved up in the rankings while other stayed where they were or moved down. Here are our Fastest Stock Risers in the new rankings (listed in alphabetical order):
Leonard Archuleta Leonard Archuleta 6'2" | 215 lbs | DL Taos | 2023 State NM , Taos: Just a few days ago we told you Archuleta was arguably the top defensive linemen in northern New Mexico. Possessing a 6-foot-2, 215-pound frame, Archuleta was definitely one of the top defensive ends in Class 4A in 2021. Now he’s close to becoming one of the top defensive ends in the state. He finished the 2021 season with 63 tackles, 2 sacks and 1 forced fumble. New Mexico State and New Mexico Highlands are two of several schools that have expressed interest.
Khalif Arenas Khalif Arenas 6'1" | 290 lbs | OL Centennial | 2023 State NM , Centennial: Listed at 6-foot-1, 290 pounds, Arenas is one of the top interior offensive linemen in the state. He didn’t surrender a sack last season. Western New Mexico and Waldorf University have expressed interest. Between Arenas, Izaiah Gonzalez Izaiah Gonzalez 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Centennial | 2023 State NM and others, the Centennial offensive line will be more than a handful for opposing defensive lines to handle this season.
Eli Asay Eli Asay WR Carlsbad | 2023 State NM , Carlsbad: One of the most underrated players in the state going into the 2022 season. He’s also one of the fastest with 4.4 speed in the 40, putting him in strong contention for the ‘King of Speed’ crown. Carlsbad has a new coach in former NMSU assistant Oliver Soukup and if the Cavemen are going to improve from their 1st round playoff loss last season, Asay will help get them there.
Daylen Chosa Daylen Chosa 6'1" | DL Bernalillo | 2023 State NM , Bernalillo: Chosa and Michael Ash Michael Ash 6'0" | 275 lbs | DL Bernalillo | 2023 State NM will form one of the top defensive line duos in Class 4A this season. Chosa had 9 sacks and 6 QB hurries in 2021. Nicknamed ‘The Goon Squad’, the Bernalillo defense could be downright nasty in 2022 with several key contributors from last season returning. If the Spartans find some offense, they’ll be dangerous.
Payton Deans Payton Deans 5'10" | 200 lbs | ATH Artesia | 2023 State NM , Artesia: Deans showed his versatility last season both running and throwing the football for the Class 5A runnerups. Deans has hit the camp circuit hard this spring as he prepares to make a bid for the starting QB job for Artesia. He’s been invited to the Top Gun camp in Naples, Fla. after his strong showing at the FBU Camp in March.
Brennen Garcia, Lovington: Garcia was ready for Lovington to repeat as Class 4A champions when two months after the Wildcats beat Ruidoso for the title, he showed up at the West Texas Showcase and performed well against his Texas counterparts. He went to ENMU for Junior Day. He earned First-Team All-State honors at DT and First-Team All-District honors at OL. If the 260-pound Garcia plays at the next level, it will likely be on the O-Line.
Layton Gillis Layton Gillis 5'8" | 150 lbs | RB Hatch Valley | 2023 State NM , Hatch Valley: Gillis is a workout warrior, which is why we’ve dubbed him the Hatch Valley Hercules. He has an excellent showing at a camp in Albuquerque recently. Hatch Valley had a challenging season in 2021, but Gillis emerged as the Bears’ top offensive weapon with 514 rushing yards while adding 22 tackles on defense. Look for Hatch Valley to be an improved football team in 2022 and Gillis, who’s been invited to the Hawaii Tiki Bowl, will be one of the stars. Western New Mexico and Waldorf University have expressed interest.
Izaiah Gonzalez Izaiah Gonzalez 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Centennial | 2023 State NM , Centennial: Gonzalez will join Arenas and others to give Centennial one of the top offensive lines in the state for the 2022 season. At 6-foot-3, 291 pounds, Gonzalez has tremendous size, strength and mobility, which is why New Mexico State, Eastern New Mexico, Western New Mexico and Waldorf University have expressed interest.
Jahvon McChriston Jahvon McChriston 6'1" | 175 lbs | LB Bernalillo | 2023 State NM , Bernalillo: There aren’t many players in the Land of Enchantment with the athleticism, talent and skill to play quarterback and outside linebacker but that’s what McChriston plans to do in 2022. He had 8 sacks last season so he knows how to get to the quarterback. New Mexico Highlands has already offered while Eastern New Mexico and Western New Mexico have expressed interest.
Celestino Reyes Celestino Reyes 6'0" | 255 lbs | OL La Cueva | 2023 State NM , La Cueva: Reyes looks ready for a sensational senior season. He got on the radar of a lot of people after an impressive showing at a linemen camp in Denver. He’s also a very strong guy. He squats 500 pounds, benches 315 and deadlifts 500. Western New Mexico is showing interest and Reyes made the trip to Silver City for WNMU’s Spring game and Junior Day.
Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: Our biggest dilemma concerning Wysong is which position we should list him. In the last ranking released in January, we had him as a wide receiver because that’s the position he’s most likely to play in college (he’s verbally committed to New Mexico). But it now appears Wysong is entrenched as the No. 1 starting QB for Cleveland. He’ll bring his elite speed (PR 10.77 in the 100) and elusiveness to the position just as he did last season. Wysong is a major reason 2022 is the Year of the Quarterback in New Mexico.
