The strategy seemed to work for former Cibola linebacker [player_tooltip player_id="134986" first="Maverick" last="Gracio"]. Now 2023 Cibola quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="137861" first="Aden" last="Chavez"], our #1 prospect in the state of New Mexico for the rising senior class, is reportedly following the same career plan.
A year ago, Gracio and his family left the state of New Mexico and relocated to West Palm Beach, FL, enrolling at Cardinal Newman High School. Following a sensational junior season in which he totaled 63 tackles, 25 tackles for loss, 12 sacks and 3 forced fumbles, the offers have poured in for Gracio. So far, he has been offered by Illinois, Pittsburgh, Purdue, nearby Florida Atlantic, Arkansas State and Appalachian State.
That’s six offers. Which is six more than Chavez has received even though he’s 6-foot-5, thew for over 3,000 yards in 2021, competed in the prestigious Elite 11 for three straight years, is a well respected leader and possesses a powerful throwing arm and high football IQ. Curiously, neither Division I program in the state - New Mexico or New Mexico State - had yet to offer.
So, Chavez said enough is enough. Sebastian Noel of ProView Networks reported Friday that Chavez will play his senior season in Florida, undoubtedly hoping he experiences the same bump in his recruiting fortunes as Gracio did after just one season in the Sunshine State.
Chavez has been invited to several camps, including Power 5 schools Arkansas, USC, Washington State, Vanderbilt, Northwestern, Florida State and TCU.
Will Chavez attend the same high school as Gracio? That question remains unanswered.
Good luck, Aden.
