At every camp I have been at this Spring, the number of defensive backs is a lot lower than the wide receivers they have to cover, but guess what, it gives these young men a lot more reps to show off and own their craft and really puts their stamina they have build from the 2021 season until now to the ultimate test. Take a look at the six standout defensive backs from the MOSH Performance Center at our Prep Redzone Wisconsin Showcase.
Garrison Codde Garrison Codde 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Verona | 2024 State WI | Verona Area | 2024
Garrison came in as one of my speedsters early from the Prep Redzone Wisconsin Showcase. He showed off some instinctive steps for his age from what I watched in 1v1s. His ability to react was what struck a chord with me, as he could seal off the wide receiver quickly with his explosion to jump all over the ball in front the WRs route. This young man excels guarding the deep routes on tape, and I’m sure will get his reps in 2022 onto many more breaking routes where he can use that quick trigger with his footwork to turn towards the ball on a dime. The Big Eight conference that I know very well will for sure need to keep tabs on this young man in the return game, as he has an electric straight line burst that will be dangerous to defend if special teams unit are not in a solid position. Garrison also packs a solid punch for his age physicality wise, and I am excited to see how much more growth he has in the weight room and on field drills this summer to have a nice 2022 junior campaign for the Wildcats. In my eyes, a prospect that will be playing on Saturdays in the near future.
Avery Kurth Avery Kurth 6'0" | 200 lbs | ATH Slinger | 2023 State WI | Slinger | 2023
Avery certainly looked like one of the most polished DBs in the group I watched from the Prep Redzone Wisconsin Showcase. Avery showed off elusive versatility in 1v1s to bring in a tough interception that showed off a ballhawk mentality with a quick read to the ball. This young man is a human hitstick that just rocks the boat heavily with his physicality level. He has that itch to smash into the first level of the field and with burling adrenaline attacking the ball carrier. Avery is also a dynamic running back that eats up contact vs. avoiding it and does an excellent job getting yards after contact with his strong presence you can tell in the weight room. He also is a consistent pass-catcher on shot yardage situations and has strong hands to add to his resume. Avery is certainly a scholarship level talent in my eyes with all the versatility he brings from both sides of the ball. A young man I will be tracking on the camp trail this summer.
Nolan Matthews | West De Pere | 2023
Nolan was a defensive back prospect that caught my eyes in the early warmups, as he showed a high level of flexibility and focus during the early reps of our Prep Redzone Wisconsin Showcase. His athletic 6’2 185 pound frame showed a lot of range from what I grasped from 1v1 drills too. I took in some tape on Nolan and came away impressed with his ability to unlock his hips on the back end of his deeper routes. I certainly believe he has more juice left in the tank to develop a quick trigger in either direction based on what my eyes can see as we look ahead to 2022. Nolan shows off a solid vertical that you probably do not want to go up against in 1v1 coverage as he likely has the hops to outjump a smaller wide receiver and solid physicality. A hard-nosed prospect that picked up a D3 offer after the Wisconsin Showcase and will show off more intangibles this summer.
Aidyn Vondra Aidyn Vondra 5'10" | 165 lbs | DB Brodhead | 2023 State WI | Brodhead | 2023
The defensive back MVP showed exactly why he was the best DB at the MOSH for the Prep Redzone Wisconsin Showcase. Rep after rep in 1v1s this young man made a lot of noise as one of the most athletic prospects overall in Franklin. Aidyn was certainly a prospect that outplayed his size, as he offered such long strides in 1v1 on his routes and a get-up vertical that had myself and some other scouts in attendance in “wow mode”. Aidyn also showed how smooth he was on his routes to make quick adjustments to give him a sound advantage versus the wide receiver he was going up against. Early in testing, Aidyn showed off a massive burst to say the least as well. Wherever this young man lines up offensively too, you need to have a circle around him because he burn you from anywhere on the field. Aidyn is a prospect that was under the radar coming into our WI showcase, and now has caught a handful of eyes and one I expect to see a handful of offers come thru at upcoming prospect camps.
Carver Cram | Oshkosh West | 2023
Carver was one of the top testers from this defensive back group at the Prep Redzone Wisconsin Showcase. He showed off his strong twitch that I got to catch during the L-Drill testing session. When you first roll Carver’s film, it quickly comes to light, where he flips in the opposite direction to make a key interception for the Wildcats defense. His ability to place himself in the best spot possible on the field especially when the ball comes in the deeper routes is what makes this kid such a dynamic prospect to watch. A sideline to sideline type prospect that has a bulldog mentality when it’s his turn to line up and make a tackle with authority. BIG fan of this kid’s vision as he can read the play very early in the play and one that will make some noise on the camp circuit this summer in my eyes.
Cole Wiedmeyer | Winnebago Lutheran Academy | 2023
Cole was another “first look” prospect for me on this defensive back list and one that made noise early in the testing sessions. I liked how this young man finished on every rep I got to watch in testing as he finished with a forceful speed. Yet another defensive back prospect on this list that has a soaring motor to cause some chaos as the first contact to the ball on tape. His film shows a similar demeanor to what I mentioned a few sentences ago, as you can see his speed turn on another gear when he sees what he wants on both ends of the gridiron. I also like how effectively he can move in space as he shows solid balance to go along with his jets he has with his lower body. Picked up a local Division III offer after camp, and I am sure that won’t be this young man’s last in the state of Wisconsin!
