And, he tells Prep Redzone New Mexico, he more than held his own against some of the nation’s top prep passers.
“I threw it really well,” Armenta said. “I got to compete with some of the top ranked quarterbacks in my class and I felt like I was one of the best ones there.”
Armenta is currently playing for the La Cueva baseball team. The Class 5A playoffs begin this week with the state championship game scheduled for May 14 at Isotopes Stadium.
Once baseball is over, Armenta plans to jump head-first into football. After team workouts in late May, his schedule for early June is jam-packed with camps. He’ll first head to the Dallas Metroplex June 3-4 for mega-camps at SMU (June 3) and TCU (June 4).
Once those camps are over, he’ll head to Oklahoma State (June 5) and Texas Tech (June 6). Four camps in four days. And that’s just the early portion of his ambitious June camp schedule as he plans to attend “a ton of other camps” after those first four.
On the recruiting front, Armenta said he has spoken with coaches from UNLV and FCS schools Yale, Drake, Abilene Christian, Sacramento State and Northern Colorado. Eastern New Mexico and Fort Lewis College have expressed serious interest.
CHAVEZ READY FOR NASHVILLE: 2023 Cibola QB Aden Chavez Aden Chavez 6'5" | 210 lbs | QB Cibola | 2023 State NM will take a business trip to Nashville on May 14-15. Chavez will compete in the Elite 11 Regional there and visit Vanderbilt, which has expressed interest in him. Chavez will camp at TCU on June 4. While there, he plans to talk with Montana State and Washington State coaches.
Both schools have expressed interest. Chavez told Prep Redzone New Mexico the two major in-state schools – New Mexico and New Mexico State – are showing the most recruiting interest right now. Florida State, Houston and San Diego State have recently extended camp invitations. The 6-foor-5 Chavez, our No. 1 2023 prospect, led the state in passing yards (3,075) and Class 6A in passing TDs (32) in 2021.
