Chavez, our No. 1 prospect in the 2023 class, journeyed to Music City USA (a/k/a Nashville, Tenn.) last weekend for the Elite 11 Regional and an unofficial visit to Vanderbilt University.
It marked the third straight year Chavez has competed in the Elite 11, probably the most prestigious QB competition in the country. 2023 La Cueva QB Aidan Armenta Aidan Armenta 6'3" | 190 lbs | QB La Cueva | 2023 State NM , our No. 2 prospect in the rising senior class, competed at the Elite 11 Regional in Las Vegas, NV two weeks ago.
“The Elite 11 was good. It was fun,” Chavez told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “The humidity affected me at first but then I started to hit my targets. I was with a good competitive group.”
Vanderbilt is one of several Power 5 programs that has expressed interest in Chavez. The school, a member of the SEC, is highly regarded around the globe for its rigorous academics.
“The Vanderbilt visit was special to me,” Chavez said. “I met the recruiting coordinator and the quarterbacks coach. I had a tour of the facilities, including the locker rooms and the practice field. The QB coach taught me something too when I met with him personally. He’s into the kinesiology of the throwing motion and I was really interested in what he was saying. It was a great trip and look forward to continue talking to Vanderbilt.”
Other Power 5 programs that have contacted Chavez include Arkansas, Florida State, Northwestern, TCU, USC and Washington State. New Mexico and New Mexico State are diligently recruiting him, seeking to convince him to stay home and play his college football.
Chavez will return to Vanderbilt on June 18 for a camp. He’s also planning to camp at Florida State, Yale and Penn in July.
Shortly thereafter, Cibola will begin preseason camp. Chavez is coming off an impressive junior campaign in which he threw for 3,075 yards and 32 touchdowns. He was the only QB in the state to surpass 3,000 passing yards.
Cibola opens the 2022 season Aug. 19 against Eldorado.
