If a lockdown free safety is the type of player that you’re searching for then look no further than the DMV area. There’s no shortage of defensive talent in this region, and the 2023 class in particular possesses some of the nation’s top defensive backs. All of these players listed have collegiate level free safety potential, and they’re all primed for huge seasons this Fall. Now, let’s analyze each player individually.
2023 6’1 185 DB – [player_tooltip player_id="146209" first="Dante" last="Lovett"] – DeMatha
[player_tooltip player_id="146209" first="Dante" last="Lovett"] is, without a doubt, one of the most talented defensive backs in the nation. His speed and ball tracking ability in tandem make it nearly impossible for receivers to score on him. He always brings a competitive edge to every play, and there’s no question that his desire to win separates him from the rest of his class. DeMatha’s entire squad is loaded with premier D1 talent, and, for that reason, [player_tooltip player_id="146209" first="Dante" last="Lovett"]’s skills will translate perfectly to the college game. He absolutely has the speed and football IQ that is required to play D1 safety, and any program that is lucky enough to land [player_tooltip player_id="146209" first="Dante" last="Lovett"] will be improving their defensive secondary exponentially. Everyone better get their popcorn ready for [player_tooltip player_id="146209" first="Dante" last="Lovett"] and the DeMatha Mustangs, because they’re in prime position for a WCAC championship run in the fall.

2023 6’2 185 DB – [player_tooltip player_id="90660" first="KP" last="Price"] – Calvert Hall
[player_tooltip player_id="90660" first="KP" last="Price"] is absolutely the most skilled defensive back in the entire MIAA conference. He has improved each and every year that he has played, and the reason for that is his commitment to training in the offseason. This offseason he lined up across from collegiate level receivers and gave them all of the coverage that they could handle. He already has D1 offers from schools like Boston College, Duke, Kansas, and Syracuse, to name a few, but there’s no doubt that he will receive more once his Senior season commences. [player_tooltip player_id="90660" first="KP" last="Price"] is an MIAA Champion with an extremely high ceiling, therefore there’s no reason why he will not thrive at the next level. Given his defensive back prowess, it would not surprise me to see Price at the safety position during his D1 tenure.

2023 6’0 190 DB – [player_tooltip player_id="90656" first="Tawfiq" last="Byard"] – DeMatha
[player_tooltip player_id="90656" first="Tawfiq" last="Byard"] has been far and away the best defensive back during 7v7s this offseason. He’s on track to force an extremely high number of turnovers in the Fall, and his speed and quickness levels are both at all-time highs. The All-WCAC defensive back announced this week on social media that he will be announcing his official commitment on August 6th. He already has D1 offers from schools like Wake Forest, West Virginia, Louisville, and Buffalo. Byard is a leader on and off the field for this DeMatha football team, and he is going to make a very positive impact on whichever program is lucky enough to sign him. DeMatha’s team as a whole is going to be very elite this season, and [player_tooltip player_id="90656" first="Tawfiq" last="Byard"] and his lockdown defense has a lot to do with that.

2023 6’2 190 DB – [player_tooltip player_id="146641" first="Zahbari" last="Sandy"] – St. John’s
[player_tooltip player_id="146641" first="Zahbari" last="Sandy"] is coming off of a career year and a WCAC championship victory season with the St. John’s Cadets. He was All-Conference honorable mention this past season as well, and there’s no doubt in my mind that Sandy’s skillset will translate exceptionally well at the next level. He’s the type of elite level athlete that is capable of playing any position, but it’s clear that he would thrive most at the free safety position. [player_tooltip player_id="146641" first="Zahbari" last="Sandy"] is extremely versatile with a very high ceiling, and he’s absolutely a Top 5 DB in the DMV Class of 2023. Sandy and the Cadets will be, yet again, must watch television in the WCAC this Fall.

2023 6’3 190 DB – [player_tooltip player_id="90646" first="Christian" last="Garrett"] – St. Frances Academy
The St. Frances Academy defense performed at a high-level for the entirety of the ‘21’-’22 season, and, at free safety, [player_tooltip player_id="90646" first="Christian" last="Garrett"] was a fundamental part of their secondary. Garrett is one of the few players, if not the only, on this list to actually line-up at free safety during games. His ability to read and anticipate offensive schemes is second to none, and there’s simply no denying how high Christian Garret’s ceiling truly is right now. Garrett will 100% prove his All-American status in 2022, and, with Garrett playing at an elite level, the SFA Panthers will have a real shot at an undefeated season this year. Scouts everywhere should be watching [player_tooltip player_id="90646" first="Christian" last="Garrett"].
