The Tigers are the lone Power Five program in one of the country's most talent-rich states.
That dynamic intrigues coaches like Kelly, who see three different coaches (Nick Saban, Les Miles and Ed Orgeron) leading national championship runs, and also makes a purple-and-gold scholarship offer a coveted benchmark for elite in-state prospects.
LSU extended <a href="https://prepredzone.com/2022/04/lsus-most-recent-in-state-offers-khai-prean-lance-heard/">new offers to a pair of talented Louisiana athletes this past week</a> in St. James athlete [player_tooltip player_id="138277" first="Khai" last="Prean"] and Neville lineman [player_tooltip player_id="138389" first="Zalance" last="Heard"].
Here's a half dozen of other in-state 2023 targets who could be some of the top candidates to join them.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="275574" first="Kyran" last="Bourda"] — 6-3, 300 DL — St. Augustine</strong>
The big defensive tackle's recruitment kicked off at an elite level from the very beginning when Georgia became his first offer last summer. Florida, Arkansas and Ole Miss joined the mix from the SEC alone, along with Florida State, Texas, Nebraska, Louisville, Louisiana (Lafayette), Louisiana Tech, ULM and Grambling State on his list. The big, powerful defensive tackle is one of the state's top prospects still awaiting an LSU offer, and is firmly on the Tigers' radar.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138440" first="Harvey" last="Broussard"] — 6-4, 180 WR — St. Martinville</strong>
The long, athletic wide receiver earned Class 3A all-state honorable mention in both football and basketball this year that has made big strides during that span from a tall, high-leaping jump-ball receiver to a more complete player, route-runner and blocker. Broussard picked up early Hawaii, Mississippi State and Virginia offers at the start of his sophomore football season, has added dozens more and recently visited Baton Rouge again and spent time with members of the new staff.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138387" first="TaDerius" last="Collins"] — 6-4, 240 DL — Northwood (Shreveport)</strong>
One of Louisiana's top prospects whose name not nearly enough people are talking about yet. Collins' sophomore film showcased impressive speed and fluidity for a tall athlete with a big frame covering the slot and dropping back in space. His junior film translated more of that quickness, paired with his continued physical development, into a well-rounded and disruptive force of a pass-rusher. Colleges began recognizing his potential in January with Northwestern State, Louisville, Tulane, Louisiana Tech, UCF and Tulsa offers. Many more have followed, and many more figure to when he's able to work out on campuses this summer and likely further skyrockets his stock.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="138407" first="Jamall" last="Franklin"] Jr. — 6-8, 370 OL — Scotlandville</strong>
Speaking of impressive quickness attributes in the trenches, few humans are bigger than the Scotlandville blocker. But as much as that size draws immediate attention, his footwork and balance may impress even more once the ball is snapped or a drill begins. Franklin takes pride in that combination and being a well-rounded young student-athlete in general including his grades, personality and an occasional basketball dunking video. His recent run of offers includes Texas Tech, Missouri, Indiana, Louisiana (Lafayette), Tulane, Southern, Grambling State and South Alabama.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="188943" first="Ashton" last="Stamps"] — 6-1, 170 ATH — Archbishop Rummel</strong>
One of Louisiana's fastest-rising prospects debuted in Prep Redzone Louisiana's 2023 rankings this year at No. 88 and will be among the notable stock-risers in the next update after a strong spring showing. Stamps is a potentially versatile athlete, but has shown flashes of being one of the state's best defensive back prospects in multiple 7-on-7 and camp opportunities. Nicholls State and Tulane extended his first scholarship offers last summer and fall, respectively. Missouri became his first Power Five last week, and he is firmly on the radars of LSU, Louisville, Florida State and other notable programs around the region.
<strong>[player_tooltip player_id="275573" first="Ja'Cory" last="Thomas"] — 6-3, 180 ATH — Walker</strong>
Another largely under-the-radar prospect that has started to garner some college attention during the past couple months is the highest ranked prospect in Prep Redzone Louisiana's most recent update in January without an LSU offer yet. Thomas has a running back background and the impressive skillset with the ball in his hands to go with it and, thanks to a big growth spurt, now prototypical receiver height. He's already showcased a lot of his dynamic playmaking ability in screen, sweep, wildcat and return games and will have the opportunity throughout this year to put more of his pass-catching on film.
