It is rarely noticed when a Cornerback executes at a high level but it is always noted when a CB performs poorly. Below are some of Seattle’s top corners who are incredible athletes and notable playmakers to watch this upcoming season.
Jack O’ Hara, Lakewood High School 5-8 130 CB
O’Hara is an incredible plug-and-play athlete. He is capable of playing press corner as well as a strong safety in the box. Jack is a reliable open-field tackler showcasing 27 solo tackles this past season and getting 62 total tackles for the season. These statistics display his tenacity as a defender, his versatility, and his playmaking ability. Some may describe O’Hara’s style as “Playing with his hair on fire” which is very fitting as he shows a keen ability to cover receivers and tackle ball carriers. He is set to post big numbers this upcoming season.
Jacobi Fobbs, Columbia River High School 5-9 160 CB
Fobbs is a cornerback who is also great in coverage and an excellent open-field tackler. Jacobi averaged 5 tackles a game, which is unusually high for corners. Furthermore of his 45 tackles, 33 of them were solo open-field tackles. Being able to set the edge, tackle elusive running backs in open space, and shutdown receivers are what makes corners impactful and it is what Jacobi Fobbs does regularly. Throughout his senior year, I expect Jacobi to post tremendous numbers and play a key part in his defense.
Austin Harrison, Bellevue Chrisitan High School 5-10 160 CB
Harrison only played 7 games this past season due to covid but still posted numbers as if he hadn’t missed any games. Harrison totaled 44 total combined tackles with an average of over 6 tackles per game. With 4 interceptions, 6 PDs, and 1 Fumble recovery, Austin is an impactful athlete who quarterbacks shy away from. Harrison’s run game support is just as electric as his pass game performance as he finished with 33 solo tackles this past season. With a full season coming up one can expect Austin to continue to excel as one of the top cornerbacks in Seattle.
Steele Shumway, Tri-Cities Prep High School 5-10 185 CB
Steele is a defensive playmaker who is constantly disrupting plays for the offense. Steele is a do-it-all player as well. Standing at 185 lbs Steel is one of the biggest CBs in this class who can easily press WRs, defeat blocks, and make open-field tackles. His style of play has allowed him to get an impressive 3 sacks, 3 fumble recoveries, and 40 tackles for the year. His phenomenal awareness and athleticism makes him an issue for opposing offensive coordinators. His level of play will only continue to improve as we approach a new season.
Landon Taylor, Clarkston High School 6-0 160 CB
The ability to mirror WR’s is a skill that CBs need to have and one that Landon executes well. Taylor has the ability to shut down an offenses’ number 1 receiver with ease. Doing so this past year he recorded 2 interceptions, 39 tackles, and an average of over 4 tackles a game. Landon’s techniques and fundamentals are implemented at a high level displaying his impactfulness this year as a senior and his potential for high performance at the college level
