Mercer has been on our radar for a while but I was still highly impressed on Saturday. He displayed good footwork in drills and excellent mechanics throughout camp. He generates a lot of power without much effort but I was most impressed with his accuracy. He has a repeatable throwing motion that allows him to be consistent in his delivery. It really worked in a camp setting and it should translate to the field.
Riley Staton Riley Staton 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Gaffney | 2024 State SC , 6’3 185- Gray Collegiate (SC)
I first watched Staton as an eighth grader a couple of years ago and thought he had some potential. Watching him now, I really like his development. A late arrival due to a prior commitment, Staton showed up and completed his first three passes without warming up, while wearing basketball shoes. He was unbelievably accurate throughout the event on a wide variety of patterns. He throws a great deep ball and moves well for his size. After the departure of an all-state running back, his offense will rely more heavily on his arm this season.
Miller Brezeale Miller Brezeale 6'3" | 170 lbs | QB Mauldin | 2024 SC , 6’3 170- Mauldin (SC)
Brezeale is a quiet guy that lets his play on the field speak for itself. I was really impressed with the combination of easy velocity and consistent accuracy he was able to get. Despite his height, he’s able to repeat his throwing motion with consistency and moves well for his size. His shuttle was one of the best at the camp regardless of position and foreshadowed the footwork he would show in drills. Upstate South Carolina needs to watch out for Brezeale in 2022.
Jaicere Bateman, 6’3 180- Portsmouth (VA)
Bateman made the drive down from Virginia to compete Saturday and held his own against a host of quarterbacks from the Carolinas. On a cold morning, he showed poise and talent as he more than held his own as a passer, delivering consistently to a variety of receivers, He was one of the more physically impressive quarterbacks with an impressive broad jump and L-drill. If he continues to clean up his footwork, he’s a guy to watch as a senior.
Mason Fortune Mason Fortune 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Millbrook | 2024 State NC , 6’2 190- Millbrook (NC)
When I previewed Saturday’s camp, I mentioned my excitement toward seeing Fortune throw and I came away highly impressed. Fortune has a simple throwing motion that generates a low of velocity with very little effort. More than that though, it’s a motion that allows him to stay balanced and accurate regardless of his feet. His footwork is consistent and he was able to connect with his receivers on a variety of routes. When I watched him throw Sunday, it looked exactly the same as when I watched Saturday.
