It seems we have made it to the top of the list for the Prepredzone.com DB rankings for 2023. I have had alot of fun putting together this series list by list and learning more about the prospects one after another.
10. [player_tooltip player_id="258576" first="Bravion" last="Rogers"] - CB 6’ 180lbs La Grange
Rogers is an athlete at the corner position that seems to excel at zone just as much as man. In man coverage he is step for step with the wide receiver, pestering and blanketing his opponent, especially on deep balls down the field. In zone Rogers locks down his assignment and reads the quarterback’s eyes and movement, waiting on the opportunity to make his move on the ball! Bravion will be bringing his 4 star talent to the SEC after committing to Texas A&M on April 12th.
9. [player_tooltip player_id="60883" first="Jamel" last="Johnson"] - CB 6’ 175lbs Arlington Seguin
Johnson is an agile player with good speed and acceleration to stick with receivers step for step in man coverage while they make their cuts. Nothing comes easy while matched up with Johnson, he is extremely disruptive at the catch point and continuously bats ball away if not taking the ball himself! Johnson is a lurker in deep zone coverage, looks comfortable in his backpedal, reading the Quaterbacks eyes waiting for an over throw or forced pass to capitalize on. Johnson is currently being offered by many power 5 schools but is uncommitted at the time of this article.
8. [player_tooltip player_id="258575" first="Ryan" last="Yaites"] - CB 6’2" 185lbs Denton Guyer
The speed in which Yaites flips his hips to turn and run with his reciever is jaw dropping! He just looks so smooth out there gliding around the field, sticking to the receivers hip. Yaites has such a good feel for when the ball is throw and doesnt panic at all in man coverage, getting his head around and looking like his is the intended receiver by being in better position than his opposition. Yaites is currently committed
7. [player_tooltip player_id="60887" first="Caimon" last="Mathis"] - CB 6’ Desoto
After watching the film there is one thing that has to be said about [player_tooltip player_id="60887" first="Caimon" last="Mathis"], HE IS A TURNOVER MACHINE! Interceptions, forced fumbles, fumble receptions, if there is a turnover on the field then Mathis is either the cause or the benefactor! Shutting down his side of the field, Mathis is usually playing deep zone and taking advantage of misfired throws or tipped passes. Even when backpedaling Mathis has the speed and acceleration to blow up screens thrown to his side, often shoving aside the blocker and putting the ball carrier in the dirt behind the line of scrimmage. Mathis is currently uncommitted at the time of this article but he is one of my favorites to watch and prospect who I will keep up with.
6. [player_tooltip player_id="258574" first="Dylan" last="Smith"] - CB 6’ 175lbs Braswell
Why quarterbacks throw the ball to Smith’s side at all is a question I continue to ask myself while watching the film. The intended receiver is completely locked up from start to finish and yet for some reason they choose to test Smith and pay the price. [player_tooltip player_id="258574" first="Dylan" last="Smith"] plays zone exceptionally well and makes tons of plays on the ball but his man coverage ability stands out on film! Matching receivers step for step in the short, intermediate and deep routes, being able to either jump routes or win the jump balls down field.
5. [player_tooltip player_id="258573" first="Peyton" last="Bowen"] - CB Denton Guyer
Bowen is a bad man in the return game, his speed and the ability to find open space is incredible! This also helps out with returning interceptions, which Bowen gets his fair share of, taking advantage of tipped passes and forced throws in zone coverage. Playing receiver also puts Bowen in the mind of the opponent, understanding route trees and putting himself in the right position to make plays! Bowen’s commitment to Notre Dame gives them a playmaker at outside corner and return game, I’m interested to see if they use him as a wide receiver as well.
4. [player_tooltip player_id="136182" first="Jacoby" last="Davis"] - CB 5’11" 170lbs North Shore
Davis is a spectacular athlete at corner with amazing ball skills. I saw davis line up like he was in outside press man and then bail to a deep third of the field post-snap, stick to the receiver running deep (who was the slot pre-snap) and come away with the pick down field! Davis has a whole highlight reel full of interceptions, most of which he returned for touchdowns! He is a difference maker on a team that continues to make D1 athletes in North Shore high school, [player_tooltip player_id="136182" first="Jacoby" last="Davis"] is the next one!
3. [player_tooltip player_id="60877" first="Braxton" last="Myers"] - DB 6’1" 185lbs Coppell
Braxton looks smooth coming out of his backpedal, has good dexterity when playing off man and mirroring receivers routes. Great hands and ball skills , Braxton is physical at the catch point, getting a hand in to disrupt a catch or climb the ladder and get it himself. Braxton has a good feel of the field , he is a smart player that can read and react effectively and use those talents to cause turnovers.
2. [player_tooltip player_id="258572" first="Malik" last="Muhammad"] - CB 6’ 170lbs South Oak Cliff
Malik is a player I’ve watched for a while now, the product of SOC has really made a name for himself after being a difference maker in a championship defense! Malik is PHYSICAL when in press at the line of scrimmage, completely taking that option away from the quarterback. Malik is all over his reciever from start to finish, his aggressive play style really separates himself from the rest. Can make the switch to free saftey to play deep 3rd and is more than willing to come downhill on run plays. With offers from multiple power 5 schools heading into his senior season, I’m eager to see where he ends up!
1. [player_tooltip player_id="136181" first="Javien" last="Toviano"] - CB 6’1" 185lbs Arlington Martin
This 5 star recruit is the number 1 cornerback in Texas on everyone’s rankings. Javien has a great feel of the field and his awareness in zone coverage is by far the best I’ve seen. He is a physical corner. His time spend at runningback shows that he doesn’t shy away from contact, in fact one of my favorite plays that he made was coming down and blowing up a runningback on a screen pass where he jetted past 2 receivers trying to block him, his football intelligence and acceleration to the football are on another level! Like I said Javien also plays runningback, which allows him to find open field after an interception and showcase his tackle breaking ability. Javien is simply the most athletic person on the football field, playing offense, defense and return. His speed makes it almost impossible to separate from him, especially deep down field, nobody is running past him! Javien is being offered by every school you can think of, I’m very interested to see where he goes in 2023!
