Courtney was one of the most impressive-looking athletes at the Prepredzone Minnesota Showcase; he also proved he could sling the rock with the best of them.
Courtney felt the whole experience Saturday was a benefit – not only to his but any of the participant’s off-seasons.
“The combine is amazing,” Courtney said. “It is a good thing for athletes like me around the state to get in front of coaches and you guys and get us some recognition and let us show off the talent we have. Especially guys like me that don’t get a lot of notice.”
“I was there to get some exposure,” Courtney continued, “get some tips for my position, compete, and have fun.”
The Chaska signal-caller took in all the coaching he got during the individual drills, especially in one area.
“My footwork was a little messed up,” Courtney said, “but I came to the combine, and the coaches critiqued it, and I was able to take some things from that. Footwork is everything. If you don’t have good footwork, the rest doesn’t matter.”
Courtney liked the way he performed but knows he needs to continue to improve.
“I felt my performance was good, but I am my biggest critic. I could have done better but just came out and did what I could do.”
The mental part of the game is where Courtney feels he excels right now.
“I am best at knowing when to throw, how to throw, where to throw it. Also, my vision, knowing the defense, and knowing how to exploit it (are strengths). I think I am good on the mental side of the game.”
Courtney can make all the throws, but his arm strength and accuracy on the underneath and mid-range throws stood out to me.
The junior has also been focused on improving his body.
“This winter, I was doing after-school lifting and am on the track team. We do full-body workouts (in the weight room). We have a main lift each day and work the whole body. Some days we do smaller weights, and as we go on, we do higher weight and low reps. In track, I run the 100 and the 200 meters.”
He was a problem for defensive backs on Saturday, and he will be a problem for defenses across the state this fall.
