Even though there was a good bit though, only a few running backs stand out more than most whenever we do these film studies. Below, we have listed a few running backs out of the state of North Carolina who we feel have not gotten the credit that they deserve. Going into next season, look for each of these players to step up for their teams, and to see their stock rise in the process.
Aronne Herring Aronne Herring 5'10" | 170 lbs | RB New Bern | 2023 State NC – New Bern
Not only is Herring a big body player, but his burst up the field allows him to finish plays and score points for his offense. He runs with a good balance, and he reads tacklers very well, allowing him to use his quick feet to change direction and get up field in a timely manner. Herring also runs through the second level very effectively, and he is quick enough to shake tacklers at the first level when plays break down. In addition to this, he also has a high upside, but can be very raw at times, especially with his footwork.
Marqies McCombs Marqies McCombs 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Chase | 2023 State NC – Chase
Last season, Mccombs ran for 40 touchdowns, and it should come as no surprise. Not only does he have a great frame, but he runs at a good pad level, and his vision allows him to make big plays effortlessly. Like many other backs, he also runs at a good pad level, and his balance allows him to make plays that he should not be able to. Overall, we love his ability to play old school football, and make plays that most players hesitate to do because of physical contact. Next season, expect him to continue to run hard, and to allow his physicality to take him to the next level.
Christian Perris Christian Perris 5'11" | 175 lbs | ATH Princeton | 2023 State NC – Princeton
One of the things that stands out most about Perris’ talent, is his ability to run through contact, and catch the ball out of the backfield. Not only does this constantly keep defenses off balance, but it adds another dynamic to the offense, and his overall ability to play the game of football. He has a good burst, and also shows that he can finish plays effectively. In total, he ran for 34 touchdowns last year, and this is largely due to his vision, and his ability to keep his legs moving through contact, and follow his blockers. If he can stick to this approach next season, we fully expect him to see his stock rise.
DJ Scott DJ Scott 5'10" | 160 lbs | RB Leesville Road | 2023 State NC – Leesville
Out of all the players on this list, we see more upside in Scott, then most of these players just based off of raw talent. He may not have the size and frame that the other players have, but his explosive, long stride is going to be very attractive to college coaches. He has a bit of a thinner frame, but he reads the tackles very well, and he understands how to run through the second level of the football field. His vision at the line of scrimmage is also very impressive, and he has the quick feet that allows him to adjust on a dime. While we would like to see him improve in the pad level that he runs at, we would also like to see him add weight to his frame. Expect him to take a leap next season in his progression, especially if these specific things trend upwards.
