Deep dive into the 2023 prospects from around the state that picked up their first collegiate offer in the month of March.
Maki Piper, 2023, LB, Highline – First Offer from UNLV, Nevada
Piper kicked off his recruitment with two Mountain West offers in March, first from UNLV then quickly followed up by Nevada. At 6'2” 217 lbs. the LB is a violent and physical force in the Highline defense. He's a downhill thumper that plays with good pad level, leverage, and leg drive to accelerate through contact and finish his opponents. As a LB, he shows a multi-dimensional skillset with his ability to fill a gap in run support, rush the passer on a blitz, or drop back in coverage and effectively play in space. He's patient with his reads to limit wasted movement and shows he can effectively shed blockers on his way to make a tackle. Good upside and potential to add more offers as the recruiting cycles progresses.

At 6'5” 230 lbs. there's a lot to like about his skillset with a strong combination of size, speed, and athleticism coming off the edge. Shows he can effectively operate as a standup DE or with his hand in the dirt. He's quick and explosive out of his stance flashing excellent bend and body control as an edge rusher. Great command of a variety of moves to beat blockers using his athleticism and length to his advantage (dip, spin, swim, etc). Runs well to redirect and play sideline to sideline, recently ran a 4.75 lasered 40 at the National Preps Showcase. With his skillset and length, expect increased recruiting attention from Power 5 programs entering his senior year.

He's a dominant inline blocker that can not only sustain but violently finish his blocks through the whistle with good controlled aggression and balance. As a receiver, he effectively attacks the short and intermediate levels by finding the soft spot in coverage and establishing positioning to be a big target for his QB. Confident in his soft hands, he shows he can make contested catches across the middle in traffic.
