Speed kills, and the more you have it, the successful you’ll be at receiver. The ability to run past defenders is critical for any receiver, and the peach state always delivers with some of the fastest prospects in the country.
Here are some of the fastest and most explosive receivers in Georgia…
Chris Nelson – South Forsyth
One of the fastest receivers in the country, Nelson is a track star who looks like he got shot out of a cannon. At the Roswell Storm track meet last month, on a cold February day, the Cumming native ran an insane 10.43 in the 100-meter dash, coming in 1st in the meet. An All-Region and All-County selection last year, Nelson’s speed was easy to see every Friday night and was as explosive as it gets. He has great burst and can score any time he has the ball in his hands. As a junior last season, Nelson caught 46 passes for 642 yards and five touchdowns. There’s no DB in the state who can run with him stride for stride down the field, making Nelson a dynamic deep-ball threat.
Zion Ragins Zion Ragins 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Jones County | 2024 State GA – Jones County
One of the the fastest prospects in the state, the young sophomore from Middle Georgia is an absolute stud on the football field and an explosive playmaker at wide receiver. The track star claims a 4.31 40-yard dash and is coming off a state championship performance in the GHSA track and field meet last summer. Ragins won the 5A state championship in both the 100 and 200 meter dash, but he’s more than that. Ragins is a football player who makes an impact with more than his speed. Ragins has great hands, can change directions with ease, and shows great body control when going for the football. The playmaker already caught 63 passes last fall for 1,062 yards and 9 touchdowns in 13 games.
Jailen Taylor – Wide Receiver
One of the breakout stars in the region last fall, Taylor is an explosive playmaker who knows how to run away from defenders. He didn’t catch a ton of passes, but when he did, he made it count for big yards. A speedy wideout, Taylor shows game-changing burst and explosion, making him one of the fastest players in the area with the ball in his hands. As a junior last fall, Taylor showed he can score on any particular play. He caught 22 passes last fall for 710 yards (32.3 yards per reception) and 10 touchdowns. The Kennesaw native and Mustang standout is starting to see his recruitment take off, and he’s expected to have a giant senior season in 2022.
Josh Nelson – South Forsyth
Like his twin brother Chris, Josh Nelson is a game-changing receiver with elite speed on the outside. Another track star, Nelson’s straight-line speed makes him a true game-changer with the ball in his hands. He’s a little on the smaller side, but that makes him deadly with the ball in his hands. He’s explosive, has great burst, and can get behind defenders with ease. He’s one of the fastest receivers in Georgia, and he showed his big-play ability throughout the 2021 season. As a junior last fall for the War Eagles, Nelson caught 28 passes for 645 yards and 7 touchdowns. You can see his big-play ability in the numbers as he averaged an incredible 23 yards per reception last year. Look for his numbers to only improve as a senior next fall.
