It was the third tournament Legacy has competed since its founding in January, and the team – and the state – continue to gain respect from more established teams across the country. The Battle Dallas tournament included teams from as far away as Florida.
The 10 New Mexico players who traveled to Dallas were: Noah Nelson Noah Nelson 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Rio Rancho | 2024 State NM (Rio Rancho), Dominic Valencia Dominic Valencia 6'2" | 170 lbs | LB Rio Rancho | 2024 State NM (Rio Rancho), Andres Aguirre Andres Aguirre 5'11" | 180 lbs | RB Cleveland | 2024 State NM (Cleveland), Andres Armijo Andres Armijo 6'2" | 180 lbs | WR Cleveland | 2023 State NM (Cleveland), Elijah Garabedian (Rio Rancho), Jason Ussery Jason Ussery 6'3" | 185 lbs | DB Los Lunas | 2024 State NM (Los Lunas), Chris Loera Chris Loera 5'8" | 160 lbs | DB Los Lunas | 2023 State NM (Los Lunas), Creed Chavez (St. Michael’s), Eduardo Contrentras (Albuquerque) and Bishop Ortega (Cleveland).
Legacy head coach Ramar Watson told Prep Redzone New Mexico that Valencia and Ussery stood out with their performances. Valencia is competing with Nelson for the starting quarterback job at Rio Rancho. Ussery is a 2024 defensive back who saw limited action with the Los Lunas varsity in 2021.
“He is learning to be more aggressive in breaking on the ball,” Watson said of Ussery. “His reaction time is generally a lot better. He broke up a couple passes this past weekend.”
What’s next for Legacy? They have been invited to a tournament in Scottsdale, AZ on April 23-24, Watson said. A return trip to Las Vegas, NZ for the Pylon Mecca 2 Tournament scheduled for that same weekend is also possible, he said. In the summer (May-July), Watson wants Legacy to compete at various 7×7 tournaments on college campuses.
