Prep Redzone Louisiana reached out to coaches and managers around the state for a few of their top players to watch in the first month or so of action.
Here are a handful of under-the-radar Baton Rouge prospects from the RedHawks, one of the state’s new programs established to provide another outlet to student-athletes around the Capital City.
Jac Comeaux — 5-11, 140 WR — Dunham (2024)
Some of the multisport athlete’s first football highlights this fall were showing his straight-line speed — listed as a 4.51-second 40-yard dash — burning right by opposing defensive backs. He finished his sophomore season with 10 catches for 245 yards (24.5 yards per catch) and three touchdowns, including a 53-yard bomb to help ice away a district victory for his first score. This 7-on-7 season, Comeaux has shown more of his short-area quickness making catches and dancing himself free for additional yards.
Abram Johnston Abram Johnston 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Parkview Baptist | 2024 State LA — QB — Parkview Baptist (2024)
One of Louisiana’s 2024 quarterbacks to watch has earned notable varsity experience as an underclassman running a more balanced Parkview Baptist offense under former Louisville and Carolina Panthers quarterback Stefan LeFors than the program’s traditional run-heavy, wing-formation attack. Johnston has good size for his age and apparent poise behind his years knowing when to stand in the pocket or slip outside. And while he possesses the athleticism to be a running threat, he does a great job keeping his eyes downfield when extending the play to set up well-throw, well-timed passes on the move if they’re available. Watching Johnston and the Eagles’ offense continue to develop the next couple years could be interesting not only within their district, but in the bigger Division-II picture.
Ryley Myers — 6-3, 180 WR — Parkview Baptist (2023)
The transfer from Central (Baton Rouge) has the potential to be a great addition for Johnston and the Eagles, and this spring is providing them a lot of valuable reps and time to build their chemistry and timing together. Myers is a big target with a good release and speed — he lists a. 4.43-second 40-yard dash — to get off the line and threaten defenses deep or play big over the middle with his ability to high-point passes and make strong catches above and away from his body.
Jay Richardson Jay Richardson 6'1" | 175 lbs | ATH Parkview Baptist | 2023 LA — 6-1, 175 WR — Parkview Baptist (2023)
Richardson is a versatile returning weapon who was one of the top targets for Johnston and senior Nate Goza this past fall. The Eagles would line the junior up all over the field, inside or out, as a deep threat on the outside, quick screen and run weapon or to find soft spots to turn, sit and move the chains. And Richardson capitalized in every role with sure hands and a focus on extend for and attack the ball for catches.
Christian Walker — DB — Madison Prep (2023)
We haven’t seen much from the rising senior safety thus far, but the indication is that he could be a name worth keeping an eye on. The Chargers list him as a defensive end or safety, and his lone highlight on his Hudl is a tackle on a run up the middle and in his direction. But Madison Prep already has at least two of the Baton Rouge area’s top defensive backs in David Jones David Jones 5'11" | 185 lbs | DB Madison Prep | 2023 State LA and Treylan James Treylan James 6'3" | 175 lbs | DB Madison Prep | 2023 State LA , and a good offseason from Walker of continued work on his coverage during 7-on-7 and overall development could help further bolster the group as they attempt to reclaim the mountain they topped with a 2020 state championship.
