Prospect Film Room, Part I

This March, some South Dakota prospects sent their film in to be evaluated. We look at some well-known prospects and some new names that have the ability to make an impact in the future. [player_tooltip player_id="56549" first="Brenden" last="Begeman"] (2023) | 6'2" 210lbs | RB/DB | Selby Brenden had 12 interceptions on the season, and it is easy to see why. He played as a free-roaming safety, and he was a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks. Brenden was able to read the quarterback's eyes and make excellent plays on the ball before breaking tackles on the return. Brenden is a versatile defender and was able to play both cornerback and safety on defense, and he even had a strip-sack on a blitz. He has great instincts and speed on the field. On offense, he was equally as versatile. He had a great understanding of the playbook and would be utilized in motions, as a receiver and running back. His great hands and power were showcased again in the offensive film, as he ran through defenders and had some great goal-line catches. My point of improvement would be on the change of speed throughout a route, stems, and releases off the ball. It was hard to get a sense of Brenden's blocking and tackling ability from the film, but those can always be points of improvement for players. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/13368947/619720f33df59608602315fa Isaac Javorski (2024) | 6'0" 165lbs | WR | Sioux Falls Lincoln Isaac did a great job attacking the defense while running routes. Whether it was a hitch or a fade, press coverage or off-man, Isaac found a way to get open because of his stems and change of direction. He did a nice job of finding holes in the defense and coming back to the ball for the quarterback. Isaac did enough in the run blocking game, getting in the way of defenders and preventing a tackle, but I would like to see him be more initiative in his blocks and be the aggressor. I would also like to see Isaac continue to work on his moves post-catch to increase his YAC potential. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/14858444/6189dd1b90eee1080c422283 [player_tooltip player_id="89279" first="Luke" last="Fraser"] (2024) | 5'11" 175lbs | ATH | Hamlin Luke's 40 was listed as a 4.79, but he looked much faster on film. He was able to explode through the line of scrimmage and hit holes that helped him dust the defense. Luke was utilized as a running back, slot receiver, and defensive back. I see the most potential for the next level as a slot receiver. Luke has a knack for getting open, and he also has great ball skills. Through the use of stems and head fakes, Luke was able to get open and even make contested catches against three defenders. I think Luke's next step is to improve his size and utilize some more force in his game. He is more of a finesse player right now, and it would be cool to see him get more downhill on defense and be a great run blocker to take his game to the next level. Riley Svanda (2025) | 5'11" 155lbs | RB/FS | Tea Riley was a touchdown machine, whether running the ball wherever he wants or making contested catches, Riley made plays his freshman season. He has great speed, and he utilized it to get to the sideline at will. This works well in high school, but it will become less reliable the more advanced the competition gets. I could see Riley having a future as either an outside receiver or a running back. Another thing I noticed with Riley's ball carrying was that he was sometimes moving the height of the ball on his jukes, which could lead to some fumbles. I am excited to keep an eye on Riley as his body continues to develop and he puts on more strength and speed. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/16455784/6153e8e790ef310c50f03cfd [player_tooltip player_id="56545" first="Taylen" last="Ashley"] (2023) | 6'0" 170lbs | QB | Sioux Falls Jefferson Taylen passed for 1,850 yards and rushed for 417 yards his junior season as the quarterback of Sioux Falls Jefferson. Taylen is able to hit his receivers right in stride over defenders, even if he is being dragged to the ground by a defensive lineman. Have everything perfectly covered? Taylen will showcase his athleticism and run into the open field and juke you or run straight through you. He is a quarterback that players love to have as their quarterback. No matter how hard Taylen gets hit, he pops up immediately. Taylen has a great deep ball, but I would love to see him continue to work on his short and medium passing game to help boost his completion percentage. His mechanics are fine and nothing stands out, but another thing that I would like to see is for him to look off defenders a little more. As Taylen continues to learn how to read defenses better, he will be able to know who will be open pre-snap and be able to look off defenders. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/13178768/618e7de85caa7a0a6c120c59 [player_tooltip player_id="160908" first="CJ" last="Smith"] (2023) | 5'11" 155lbs | QB/DB | Dell Rapids CJ does a great job of reading the defense, using read options and play actions to make big plays. CJ is sneaky quick and has good escape skills in the pocket. He had a couple of great plays where he stepped up in the pocket and evaded multiple players before getting the ball to a receiver like a magician. A lot of his throws are off his back foot, so it would be nice to see CJ put some more power into his throws by stepping into them. This will also help him be able to throw it farther and fit the ball into tighter defenders. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/11462935/619d0ffa47979609647f386d [player_tooltip player_id="223093" first="Hunter" last="Abraham"] (2023) | 6'0" 150lbs | LB/RB | Garretson Hunter may look undersized at 150lbs, but he sure doesn't play like it. Hunter seeks out contact. Whether it is running through a blocker or a defender, Hunter uses his physicality to make plays. It would be scary to see Hunter at even 180lbs if he kept his same mindset. He is a kid that opposing players dread playing against and tackling. There are a couple times where Hunter goes to his knees to make a tackle, so it would be a nice improvement for him to run through the ball carrier instead of absorbing contact. I can see Hunter having a future as a power back or even fullback at the next level. He also has the ability to play linebacker too. Another thing that I would like Hunter to add to his game is not relying on pure force each time. While it can be effective at times, I think he will be able to make a lot more plays if he can use a combination of power and finesse when running the ball or pass rushing against running backs. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/14151173/61fc13d519a58f0bd44a4ff2 [player_tooltip player_id="310433" first="Carson" last="Kruggel"] (2023) | 5'9" 260lbs | OL | Sioux Falls Jefferson Carson plays center for Sioux Falls Jefferson, and he is a solid run and pass blocker. Bull rushes will not work against Carson, as he plays low and has great strength. I would like to see him continue to work on his run blocking and finishing his blocks. He is also a great communicator and has a good football mind, which allows him to easily pass off stunts. I would also like to see Carson continue to work on his open field blocks against linebackers and DBs. https://www.hudl.com/video/3/13171547/619d288147979609647f4dac
