Continue ReadingThe New Mexico Legacy 7×7 team may have lost three of four contests at a national tournament in Phoenix last weekend, but in the process they proved they can compete with some of the top 7×7 teams in the country as the outcome of every game boiled down to the final possession.
Legacy coach Ramar Watson was ecstatic about how his team performed in Phoenix.
“We did really well,” Watson told Prep Redzone New Mexico. “We played two nationally ranked teams. One of the coaches gave us some respect. He told me that we have a good program on the way up. Other coaches told me that in a year or two we’re going to be a tough team to beat. It was refreshing to hear from a team like that. We have gotten better and better. It shows the type of talent we have in this state.+”
Watson said the standout players for Legacy in Phoenix were 2023 quarterback Noah Nelson Noah Nelson 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Rio Rancho | 2024 State NM (Rio Rancho), 2023 Chris Johnson Chris Johnson 5'9" | 135 lbs | WR West Mesa | 2023 State NM (West Mesa), WR/CB Andres Armijo Andres Armijo 6'2" | 180 lbs | WR Cleveland | 2023 State NM (Cleveland) and CB Creed Chavez (St. Michael’s).
Legacy now prepares for a prestigious Dallas tournament in two weeks (March 26-27). Just as with the first two tournaments they’ve competed in, many of the best (and far more established) 7×7 teams in the country will be there.
In the meantime, they’ll continue to practice every Saturday and Sunday afternoon at La Cueva High School. With high school basketball season winding down this weekend with the state championship games in each classification at The Pit in Albuquerque, additional players could join the program.
Legacy tweeted Wednesday that it hoped to host a jamboree or mini-tournament next weekend at La Cueva High School as part of its final preparations for the Dallas Tournament.
Legacy again had just 13 available players in Phoenix. But Watson believes it will be a different story in Dallas in two weeks.
“It’s spring break and basketball will be over, so we should have a full squad for the first time,” Watson said. “I wouldn’t be surprised if we finish pretty high up. It’s going to big-time competition. It’s Texas football, so it’s going to be physical and high-flying. I can’t wait to compete again.”
Eastern New Mexico has invited all the 2023 prospects on the Legacy team to its Junior Day in April.
“This is doing what I envisioned it would do, get these guys seen by college coaches,” Watson said. “That’s huge. I know a lot of coaches are watching our progression as we go to all these tournaments.
“The more we get on the national stage the more exposure we will get. This is only going to grow. I’m excited where this is going and the direction is going. This is something New Mexico has been waiting a long time for.”
We are continuing to grow as a team. We are getting better and better every single tournament.
