It has been a pleasure to evaluate film on Minnesota gunslingers as they worked to lead their teams during the 2021 campaign. I am sure I will be looking at many more Quarterbacks in the months to come but for this go-round it is time to move on. Very shortly I will start to take a look at one of my favorite positions on the football field, the Fullback (Second only to the offensive line in my heart). Stay tuned as I evaluate the Grittiest players on the field!
Owen Louwagie Owen Louwagie 5'11" | 165 lbs | QB Lakeview | 2023 State MN – (Lakeview High School) 5’10 165lbs. C/o 2023. @owenlouwagie
Playmaker! Owen is just that, undersized kid who moves to create better passing lanes for himself he continuously keeps the pressure on the defense with his legs and arm. He needs to continue to build strength to be able to get the ball to all parts of the field but shows great touch and accuracy on outside throws, the ability to throw on the move going both to his right and his left and is very good in the designed QB run game. Owen is fun to watch. Best thing on film– 14 seconds in to the highlight he shows a very important QB trait and that is the willingness to take a shot to make a shot! Standing in the pocket with a free rusher in his face he calmly steps into a touchdown deep throw knowing he will get hit, young quarterbacks I promise you, you will hardly feel a thing when your team is standing in the end zone at the end of the play!
Ryan Bengston- (Becker) 5’9 160lbs. C/o 2023. @bengtson_ryan
Ryan is an absolute field general; he has a variety of skills and ways to help his team be successful. He shows the ability to get the ball out of his hands quickly and accurately from the gun and can also make high level throws outside the hashes. But what makes him truly dynamic as I have mentioned many times in my evaluations is his ability to create space and time to put pressure on the defense. I think Ryan is one of the best I have seen in the class of ’23 of extending plays and making good decisions with the ball. He also does a nice job in the designed QB runs. Obviously a bit on the short side but he makes up for it with his movement skills and accuracy. Best thing on film– at the 2:03 mark it is really a clip that isn’t just about Ryan but about his wide receiver and his coaches, as he sprints to his right both he and his receiver recognize press cover 2 and they do a great job adjusting the called route and making the completion in the void behind the corner but wide enough and in front of the half safety who is coming over the top.
Cole Hentges Cole Hentges 6'0" | 200 lbs | QB Sartell-St. Stephen | 2023 State MN – (Sartell) 6’0 195lbs. C/o 2023. @cole_hentges
What I notice first about Cole is how advanced his footwork is when in and out of the pocket. He does a great job putting himself in position to make accurate throws to all parts of the field. He can throw on the move going both right and left. I also enjoy his ability to scramble and the understanding of how to use the pump fake to manipulate defenders (Not an easy skill to master). Best thing on film- I already mentioned it but when he is scrambling out to his right he has a defender ready to tackle him, he pump fakes getting the player off his feet and then bull dozes his way through the next few guys for a nice gain.
Albert Rundell Albert Rundell 6'1" | 195 lbs | ATH Watertown-Mayer | 2023 State MN – (Watertown-Mayer) 6’1 190lbs. C/o 2023. @AlbertRundell
Albert wears number 35 on film, just had to mention it because I love it and am sure there is some kind of story behind it. He is a physical runner in both scramble and plus one situations. I really enjoy seeing him rip the ball into the seams vs. 1 high defensive structures it shows and understanding and a sense of timing. There is a tendency to not transfer his weight at times which can hinder accuracy but overall, he has a very good skillset. Best thing on film- Just over two minutes in he is running a bootleg to his right, he does a great job with his eyes and progression when the initial flat read doesn’t come open and puts the ball back inside to a 10 yard over on the run, it is an accurate throw and he does an excellent job of getting his upper body pushed around to make it.
Austin Randall Austin Randall 6'1" | 180 lbs | ATH Waconia | 2024 State MN – (Waconia High School) 6’0 165lbs. C/o 2024. @AustinRandall_
Austin is a youngin’ in a system with an outstanding running game and dynamic backs so as you can assume he didn’t sling it a ton. When he did get a chance to open it up he showed a great ability to get the ball in and out of his hands to 1st level routes with accuracy. He does a nice job of finishing throws and transferring his weight and he also is adept at taking off when his first or second read is not there to get positive yards for his team. Best Thing on Film- at about the 1:09 mark he perfectly executes a 1st level RPO throwing a slant to his slot receiver, you can see he has a good understanding of the scheme and his mind is actually made-up pre-snap to ride and pull and put his receiver in a position to make yards after the catch!
