Ferrell’s Notes: Virginia’s Elite 2023 DBs

The 2023 rankings were updated last week. Let’s take a look at some of the top Defensive Backs in the state. <img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-24527" src="https://prephoops-uploads.s3.amazonaws.com/redzone/uploads/2020/06/Generic-Featured-Image-2-300x187.jpg" alt="" width="300" height="187" /> &nbsp; Antonio Cotman | 6’2’’ 190 lbs | Life Christian Academy Cotman is a headache for opposing receivers with his ability to just smother them in man coverage and he’s equally dangerous playing zone. He already has been causing havoc this spring on the 7v7 circuit.  He’s a ball-hawking defender who’s style seems similar to Super Bowl Champion defensive back and arguably the best corner, Jalen Ramsey.  Listed as our top defensive back in the state, and 8th overall player, he has offers from Indiana, Arkansas, Temple, Virginia, Eastern Michigan, Marshall, Toledo, Campbell, Duke, Virginia Tech, and Florida State. &nbsp; [player_tooltip player_id="290138" first="Kaleb" last="Spencer"] | 6’3’’ 200 lbs | Life Christian Academy [player_tooltip player_id="290138" first="Kaleb" last="Spencer"] is our 17th overall player in the state, and 2nd ranked defensive back. This definitely explains why Life Christian Academy’s dominance on the defensive side of the ball. Spencer often lines up as the Nickel Safety or Star, depending on what your defense calls your in the box safety, but has the versatility to play back high. However, is relentlessness coming off the edge and  has the body frame that can grow into a linebacker at the next level. He currently has many Division One FBS offers from schools like LSU, Kentucky, Oklahoma, Temple, Campbell, Duke, Marshall, and Indiana. &nbsp; [player_tooltip player_id="290145" first="Caleb" last="Woodson"] | 6’3’’ 200 lbs | Battlefield High School Woodson’s output on offense and defense was a huge part of why Battlefield went on 13-0 run this season and won the Regional Championship. He earned 6A First Team All State, First Team All Region, and First Team All District honors. He currently has offers from the University of Penn, Norfolk State, Wake Forest, Old Dominion, West Virginia, South Carolina, Virginia, and Virginia Tech. Woodson is our 3rd ranked Defensive Back and 28th ranked player overall in the state. &nbsp; [player_tooltip player_id="290285" first="Jonathan" last="Pennix"] | 6’ 170 lbs | Appomattox High School Pennix has been part of 2 State Championship teams and was able to lead Appomattox this year all the way to the State Semifinal game. He earned 2A First Team All State honors on both sides of the ball, as a Defensive Back and Running Back. He is listed as the 4th ranked defensive back and the 34th player overall in the state. He holds 8 Division 1 offers from  Elon, Buffalo, James Madison, Virginia, Louisville, and more. &nbsp; [player_tooltip player_id="290291" first="Deuce" last="Geter"] | 6’ 200 lbs | Stone Bridge High School Deuce was a big part of Stone Bridge winning the 5A State Championship again.  He finished the season with 74 tackles, 5 tackles for a loss, 2 interceptions, 5 pass break ups, 4 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery. He is listed as the 5th ranked defensive back in the state of Virginia. He earned First Team All Region and First Team All District honors this past season. He has offers from the University of Penn and Campbell, and I see his recruiting starting to heat up even more this spring.
