Landon Varnes Landon Varnes 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Brandon | 2024 State MS | Brandon
The right arm of Varnes played a huge role in getting his Brandon team to the state title game last season. As only a sophomore, the young signal caller did one of the toughest things to do in high school sports – get his team to within one win of a state championship. Varnes complete 56% of his passes for over 2,500 yards including 19 TD’s with 11 INT’s. Varnes shows ability, even as an underclassman to push the ball down the field, which led in part to the inflated INT number. Elite footwork is evident on tape and allows him to crisply navigate pocket. Arm strength shows in his ability to throw across his body, which he probably does a little too often. Consistently hits receivers in stride 20-25 yards down the field. Good eyes – gets thru multiple reads. 7 on 7 season will open coaches eyes to him.
Trey Petty Trey Petty 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Starkville | 2024 State MS | Starkville
The 2022 season saw Petty burst onto the scene for the Yellow Jackets. True dual threat talent. Arm strength and accuracy is impressive, especially in panic situations. Very composed and poised within the offense. Throws receivers open at multiple levels. Raw talent leaps off the tape and will allow him to become more technically sound over the course of his next two high school seasons. Thickly framed with toughness that shows. Prone to short arm the ball a bit but nothing overly concerning mechanically.
With Varnes and Petty the class of quarterbacks for 2024 is off to a great start and will only grow moving forward. 6A offenses in the north (Petty) and south (Varnes) have their hands full for the next two years with these guys.
