Defensive backs are the four or five defensive players in charge of pass coverage first. When threat of the pass is gone, they will then focus on the run. These positions commonly consist of cornerbacks or safeties, positioning themselves near the sidelines or behind the linebackers. In order to be a lockdown defensive back you have to have speed, great anticipation, awareness, and be able to start and stop on a dime. Here we will focus on some young men looking to have a “lockdown” season in 2022.

Jaymion Hardin Jaymion Hardin 5'10" | 160 lbs | DB Little Rock Central | 2024 State AR is a young man ready to take over. His 5’10″ 160lb frame, along with his 4.8 40-yard dash, makes him an absolute annoyance to opponents. This young man has great ball awareness, and even better tackling. Simply put, he doesn’t give up big plays. Jaymion has a great ability to stay with the play, as if his motor never stops running. While Jaymion has spent some time as a wide receiver, I really feel he is best served at the corner position. His ball tracking ability alone sets him apart from the rest.

Pete Overton #9 SS/CB C/O 2024
Sylvan Hills High School
Sherwood, AR
Pete Overton’s ability to disrupt a catch cannot be overstated. He is great when man to man and has a solid first step. Pete rarely allows the big play; he likes to make the opposing offense work for their yards. Overton bounces between safety and corner, serving well at both positions. His 5’10″ 150lb frame allows him to put himself in great positions to make plays. Pete is a nuisance and has put himself in a position to have an awesome 2022 season.

Marcus Wimberly Marcus Wimberly 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Bauxite | 2025 State AR #1 SS C/O 2025
Bauxite High School
Bauxite, AR
Marcus Wimberly Marcus Wimberly 6'1" | 170 lbs | DB Bauxite | 2025 State AR , when at the safety position, does everything you would want your safety to do. He plays the pass very well, most plays ending in an incompletion. If the quarterback does complete the pass, Wimberly is there immediately to make the tackle. Along with the pass, Marcus is just as good (if not better) at playing the run. His 4.58 second 40-yard dash ensures he gets to the line quick, and his 6’1″ 170lb frame helps make sure that he bodies up and makes the big tackle. Make no mistake about it, Wimberly will make you pay.

Patton Whicker #14 SS C/O 2024
Pulaski Academy
Little Rock, AR
There is something to be said about great awareness, and Patton Whicker certainly has it. The All-Conference strong safety packs a punch. Whicker has the perfect size, awareness, and speed that scouts love to see. He is a sound tackler as well, rarely giving up the big play. His 6’3″ 180lb frame just dominates on the field, and it is fun to watch for sure. Whicker plays the run very well and has shown great anticipation when the ball is in play. He has put himself in position to stand out in 2022.
