It still early with a lot yet to be determined before next season, but have a look at who projects as the conference POY favorites in each league as of right now..
NEXT UP: Pacific Conference
OFFENSE
1.[player_tooltip player_id="110209" first="Jordan" last="Fisher"] RB 23’ Westview- Fisher broke out as a Junior averaging 9.56 yards per carry, while totaling 1,549 yards and 26 TDs. With the transfer of [player_tooltip player_id="110171" first="Sam" last="Leavitt"] and the graduation of WR’s [player_tooltip player_id="28833" first="Darrius" last="Clemons"] and [player_tooltip player_id="143912" first="Drew" last="Bennett"], the Cats will rely heavily on the run game putting even more emphasis on the very versatile back.
2.[player_tooltip player_id="205822" first="Payton" last="Roth"] RB 23’ Jesuit- I could see Roth breaking records and being the conference and state POY. He has that type of potential. Last season he went down early with an injury after multiple TDs & 200+ yard performances.
3.[player_tooltip player_id="152333" first="Lonnie" last="Burt"] RB 24’ Jesuit- Burt Jr. has the potential of being Oregon’s breakout player of the year on both sides of the football. He split time with Roth and [player_tooltip player_id="28888" first="Michael" last="Rincon"], so he was not a featured guy by any means. That said any time he touches the ball he looks like the best player on the field.
4.[player_tooltip player_id="110174" first="Kaden" last="Huppin"] ATH 23’ Westview- I expect Huppin to compliment Fisher nicely, and have a big year on the offensive side of the ball. If talented 2025 QB [player_tooltip player_id="285857" first="Nolan" last="Keeney"] does a good job, he will reap the statistical benefits with the graduation of a talented senior group.
5.[player_tooltip player_id="205816" first="Hunter" last="Borter"] QB 23’ Beaverton- Borter had a nice Junior year and has the potential of being one of the top QBs in the region. That said as BHS graduates some talented skill kids and there are real question marks as it relates to his surrounding cast. He will be the X factor if they are to win.
DEFENSE
1.[player_tooltip player_id="205818" first="Noah" last="Staley"] DE/OLB 23’ Jesuit- As as a 6-0 220 pound DE staley played out of position from a size standpoint, earning 1st team all Metro honors as a Junior. He is a freak athlete and incredibly strong, making it difficult for those on the O line to deal with his overall athletcism. He will be a problem for opponents.
2.[player_tooltip player_id="110579" first="Garrett" last="Speer"] WLB 23’- Another kid who broke out as a junior earning 1st team all Metro and honorable mention all state honors. Much like Staley he plays with his hair on fire and only knows one speed. With the talent around him, look for Speer to excel even more so at that WLB spot.
3.[player_tooltip player_id="152335" first="Liam" last="Cassidy"] DT 24’ Jesuit- As a prospect Cassidy ranks as one of the top recruits in the state. There isn’t always a lot of notoriety playing on the interior like he does, but Cassidy will require a consistent double team and even that might not work. Look for him to follow up on his 1st team all Metro accolades as a POY favorite.
4.[player_tooltip player_id="152334" first="Jace" last="Burton"] CB 24’ Jesuit- It wouldnt surprise me to see Burton pick off a handful of passes and end up being the Metro POY. His 1st team all conference honors as a Sophomore speaks to his potential. The kid is legit.
5.[player_tooltip player_id="110174" first="Kaden" last="Huppin"] CB 23’ Westview- As referenced on Offense, Huppin will be in the spotlight as a senior with the graduation of so many. He was an all conference kid on D as a Junior and tests off the charts. Expect him to mirror reigning POY [player_tooltip player_id="143912" first="Drew" last="Bennett"] on defense and some of his numbers.
6.[player_tooltip player_id="110184" first="Campbell" last="Sager"] DE 23’ Westview- Sager has the size and demeanor to dominate and write his own ticket. We will see how much of a defensive presence he has, as teams will prepare for him, specifically after earning 1st team all league honors last season.
7.[player_tooltip player_id="278374" first="Blake" last="Hurley"] OLB 24’ Sunset- Hurley comes from a talented family and had an impressive Sophomore season earning 3rd team all conference accolades. You can expect him to be one of the top two way athletes in the Metro with the Apollos losing a lot to graduation.
8.[player_tooltip player_id="152333" first="Lonnie" last="Burt"] LB 24’ Jesuit- Burt is one of the top players in the state for his class but it’s yet to be determined where his presence will be felt the most. Whether that’s offense, defense or both.
