Today we start with the 6-A Conference, with a look at the Van Buren Pointers. We will look back briefly at the 2021 season and give a look ahead at the talented prospects returning for the 2022 season.
The Pointers finished with a record of 4-6 in 2021. However, that record is a bit deceptive because of injuries that the Pointers would have to deal with mid-way through the season. With plenty of talented prospects returning for the 2022 football season, the Van Buren Pointers have the talent to make a deep playoff run. The Pointers are a team that has what it takes to get on a roll early in the season and keep the momentum going.
Looking now at the offensive side of the ball for the Pointers. Sophomore quarterback Bryce Perkins Bryce Perkins 6'2" | 175 lbs | QB Van Buren | 2024 State AR gives the Pointers a quarterback that can fit the football into some tight windows. Perkins can make any throw needed to run the Van Buren offense and has the arm strength to stretch the field. He does a good job of keeping his eyes down the field when he escapes the pocket. Perkins is looking to make the throw before he uses his legs to pick up yardage on the ground. The Pointers are in good shape at the quarterback position over the next few years.
The rushing attack for the Pointers will see junior running back Hudson Cheatham receive opportunities to carry the football. Cheatham is a versatile player that the Pointers can line up all over the football field. He does a great job of identifying the rushing lane and exploding through the hole. Cheatham is a dangerous receiver out of the backfield and will give the Pointers a threat in both the run and pass game.
The Van Buren Pointers are a team that can light up the scoreboard using the passing attack. Junior wide receiver Malachi Henry Malachi Henry 6'1" | 175 lbs | WR Van Buren | 2023 State AR is a wide receiver that is the very definition of the playmaker role. Henry has already received a scholarship offer from Florida Atlantic and is a player to keep an eye on this season. Freshman wide receiver Jadyn Johnson Jadyn Johnson 6'0" | 195 lbs | WR Van Buren | 2025 State AR is another wide receiver Van Buren fans will enjoy watching over the next few years. Van Buren’s offense will be a fun one to watch this season.
Meanwhile, on the defensive side of the ball for the Pointers. Junior linebacker Grant King does an excellent job of identifying the run and bringing down the ball carrier. Sophomore safety Nathan Fisher is a hard-hitting safety that is always around the ball carrier. Fisher can move up and stuff the run as well as drop back into coverage and deliver a blow. The Van Buren defense has the potential to cause the opposing offenses plenty of headaches in 2022. Look for the Pointers to make a playoff run this season.
