The Toledo City League is one of my favorites in Ohio; not only do I love covering the players, but I was also once a head coach in this league. Lots of good talent come in and out of the area, and if you walk the halls of Toledo Public Schools, you will see what I mean! The team commanders typically play the QB position, so let’s break down who’s coming back in 2022.
Corey Robinson c/o 2023 – Start High School
5’11 170lbs
Notes:
- Robinson was spectacular for the Spartans as they went on to win another city league title in 2021. The dual-threat from Start can hurt teams in multiple ways as Corey has good vision and solid footwork. Making explosive plays is a big part of Robinson’s game as he does it constantly with the run game. The lefty will have a crucial target coming back in Corvell Morgan Corvell Morgan 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Toledo Start | 2023 State OH as they look to run up the city league in 2022. Robinson passed for over 1,200 yards with 15 touchdowns last fall.
Victor Reed Victor Reed 5'11" | 165 lbs | ATH Bowsher | 2023 OH c/o 2023 – Bowsher High School
5’11 175lbs
Notes:
- As the guys call him, Vic is a football player who plays QB for the Blue Racers and a good one. Watching Vic at 4th and Goal football camps this offseason showed me that Reed is a true athlete. Vic is the definition of an ATH, from running routes to playing man press coverage. Victor made plays in crafty was in 2021 for Bowsher and is slated to run the offense this fall. Reed has a live arm and throws a nice tight pass with accuracy. Expect a breakout season for Reed in 2022.
Carnel Smith Jr c/o 2024 – Scott High School
6’4 210lbs
Notes:
- Carnel comes from a strong bloodline as his dad played for Scott and went on to earn a scholarship at Pitt. The big-framed Smith Jr passed for over 1,400 yards with 18 touchdowns on the side. Carnel can keep his eyes downfield and has made many plays while faking the run. Another thing to note is his ability to hang tough in a closing pocket while still throwing darts. All District talent for sure in 2022 and will be a household name in the area.
Taylor Jones c/o 2023 – Waite High School
6’0 175lbs
Notes:
- Jones came to Waite after transferring from St. Francis de Sales last summer. Jones battled minor injuries during the season but still throws for just over 600 yards in 2021. The Indians had their first two games canceled due to COVID-19, which took away valuable reps for Jones and company. The team finished the season 4-5 while making the playoffs. Look for a healthy Taylor to lead this team to another trip to the playoffs.
Ethan Klinger c/o 2025 – Rogers High School
5’11 135lbs
Notes:
- Ethan was thrown into the fire as a freshman and started four games for the Rams. Out of those four games, Ethan’s record as a starter is sitting pretty at 3-1. The limited film makes it challenging for a full assessment, but one thing you do know is he is tough and will develop just fine as a passer. Klinger threw for two touchdowns in 2021.
Woodward is still searching for a QB to replace four-year starter Dominic Chizmar, c/o 2022. I’ll bring you more info in the next edition.
