Regardless, South Gwinnett will be back next year, and will likely be looking to make another push for the playoffs. Last season, even though they lost to McEachern in the first round, they showed flashes of talent throughout the season in plenty of areas of their football team. Next year, to help bolster any chances that they may have of making the playoffs, they will rely heavily on some of their young talent, including some of their top returners, which are listed below for your review.
Tymere Burton- DE / OLB
Last year, Burton was not only a big part of the team’s defense, but he could be viewed as one of the team’s leaders. Not only is he a big, bodied player, but he is quick off the ball, which positions him to make tackles for loss, sacks, and additional plays such as forced fumbles. Needless to say, this creates great momentum for the team, and we fully expect him to return in this capacity next year, and to continue to improve in his ability to get off the ball, wrap up on tackles, and also make big stops in pursuit.
Elijah McDowell- WR
When running routes, Elijah does a good job of separating from defenders, high pointing the ball, and making big time catches and plays. Not only will this translate well for the team next year, but it will be crucial in any success that they may have. In addition to this, McDowell also has a good catch radius, and he is able to make plays from various angles, and in the craziest conditions. With this being said, we are also very impressed with his body control, but would like to see more speed from him next season, as this will be important against higher levels of competition.
Caleb Sheffield- WR/ DB
Sheffield has seen time on both sides of the ball, but we primarily view him as a WR due to the time he spends in the game, and in practice perfecting his offensive craft. Sheffield is not only good at high pointing the ball, but he does a good job of tracking it in the air with his eyes. In addition to this, Sheffield also plays with good balance, burst, and route running ability. He can be seen to get out of his breaks quickly, and cleanly, with a smooth transition in his speed.
Darius Owens- DB
Next season, Owens playmaking ability, and mindset on the defensive side of the ball will be crucial for his team. Not only is he an aggressive player, but he is very consistent in the way he comes downhill and makes tackles and plays. With this, he also has good movement skills, and wraps up on tackles incredibly well, making it hard for players to escape. In addition to this, he also plays with decent feet, and discipline in his coverages, and on field responsibilities. This results in plays on the ball, and tackles in pursuit.
