Recruiting begets recruiting.
Along the southernmost corridor of South Carolina, college coaches who are flocking to see Freeling can’t help but see some nearby standouts, too. No, it’s not all about the 6-foot-7, 275-pound tackle. But we also know his stardom could be a nice push for others to see their own chances improve.
Zolten Osborne Zolten Osborne 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Fort Dorchester | 2023 State SC , QB, Fort Dorchester
We’ve been high on the 6-foot-2, 205-pounder since the end of a sophomore season in which it was clear he had some serious potential. Next season, his value to Fort Dorchester increases, as a number of the other top offensive weapons on this team will have graduated. If Osborne (pictured) can keep his numbers where they’ve been, it will be a significant sign that we were right all along.
Vaughn Blue Vaughn Blue 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Oceanside Collegiate Academy | 2023 State SC , RB, Oceanside Collegiate
Oceanside’s offensive line (led by that dude up top) is in a symbiotic relationship with the guy in the backfield. Blue brushed up to 1,500 total yards mark last fall as a junior. And with the Landsharks about to be breaking in a new quarterback after the departure of Colby Shirey Colby Shirey 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Oceanside Collegiate | 2022 State SC , Blue’s touches early and often could shoot through the roof.
Michael Dennison Michael Dennison 6'6" | 225 lbs | TE Beaufort | 2023 State SC , TE, Beaufort
Talk about a match-up nightmare. Dennison, a 6-foot-6, 220-pounder, is going to dwarf just about anyone who lines up across from him, regardless of class. Now, with the Eagles moving down to Class 3A, that becomes more apparent. Now, tack on the fact that Beaufort loses two of its best receivers and will also be working with a young quarterback, and Dennison goes from safety valve to potential focal point.
Marcus Adams Marcus Adams 6'5" | 235 lbs | TE James Island Charter | 2023 State SC , TE, James Island
After switching schools (from Oceanside Collegiate) and positions (from defensive end), Adams immediately went to work at James Island. He provided a valuable target for budding quarterback Braxton Scott Braxton Scott 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB James Island Charter | 2024 State SC , catching 20 passes for 366 yards and a pair of touchdowns. He still played some defense here and there, but Adams’ long-term potential is now tied to the other side of the ball. And with his 6-foot-5, 235-pound build, there will be opportunities.
Kevon Rivera Kevon Rivera 5'9" | 215 lbs | RB Hanahan | 2024 State SC , RB, Hanahan
Last season, his second on the Hawks’ varsity squad, Rivera topped 1,000 rushing yards while getting into the end zone nine times. With Phillip Simmons moving up into this region and Beaufort moving down into it, Rivera now becomes even more of a need for Hanahan. His 13 or so carries per game average from his sophomore season could be dwarfed in a hurry, as he is a bonafide scoring threat for a team that will need more points to contend.
