Iowa 2025’s to Watch
In this article:
Today’s piece centers around some of the top freshmen in the state of Iowa. Each prospect we analyzed was a varsity contributor last fall and was a key cog for their respective programs. With three years left at the high school level, look for their game to only get better and see their recruitment take off in the near future. With that being said, here’s who to watch for!
DE: Brody Clubb Brody Clubb 6'3" | 245 lbs | DL Clear Creek-Amana | 2025 State IA , 6’3″, 225, Clear Creek Amana
A slippery pass rusher that shows active hands-on tape. He plays with great pad level and can easily slip through down blocks. Clubb is a violent tackler behind the line of scrimmage who will make backs feel his presence. He uses his long arms to get extension on tackles before forcefully throwing them by to make his way into the backfield.
RB: DeShawn Long DeShawn Long 5'11" | 165 lbs | WR Ames | 2025 State IA , 5’11″, 165, Ames
A shifty back that can create a spark in the run or pass game. Long is a more than capable runner between the tackles who will lower his shoulder to pick up the tough yards to end a run. His cuts are so powerful and oftentimes lead to defenders falling to the turf attempting to tackle him while DeShawn is dashing right past them. As a pass-catcher, his hands are quite steady in traffic and will make something if not brought down immediately.
QB: Jack Wallace Jack Wallace 6'2" | 215 lbs | QB Iowa City West | 2025 State IA , 6’3″, 200, Iowa City West
An outstanding vertical ball thrower with a twichy release. Jack is a calm thrower on sprint out concepts who will square his shoulders towards his target before putting the ball right on his wideouts numbers. He has such consistent ball placement and can put it between two defenders bearing down on his target. Despite his age, he can generate a ton of velocity behind his throws and put his ball on a rope at all three levels of the field. He’s brilliant pre-snap, ID’ing one high and two high coverage & will take what the defense gives him.
DT: Joey VanWetzinga, 6’2″, 245, Pleasant Valley
An interior defensive line prospect with a quick first step off the snap. This is a forceful bull rusher with strong legs and heavy hands. His speed gives pass protector issues, and he’s even shown the ability to split two OL’s with a slide coming towards him. Additionally, Joey is extremely flexible and will come off the ball drop his shoulder to knee height, causing guards to whiff on their blocks. This kid was dominant in his first varsity season and should be a really intriguing three technique if he continues to beef up.
